soulsinging wrote:1. we've discussed the hits packages ad nauseum. it was a record company decision to fill a gap in their catalogue: a one disc compilation spanning their career. neither excessive nor unreasonable.
2. you may not like green day, but they were making their music long before that sound became hip. i think they've established that they are no more imitators than pearl jam is. to dismiss green day becos they spawned a shit load of crappy imitators is stupid. we ought to dismiss pearl jam for giving us nickelback and creed if you're gonna go that route. that said, i think green day sucks, but i dont think u2 collaborating with them is in any way shameful.
3. i already discussed the ipod commercial. try reading it. then tell me what other commercial they've done. i admire the fact that their support of ipod is a big fuck you the the record industry. do you prefer the metallica approach to what u2 is doing?
4. destiny's child... ive got no defense except that sometime people have poor tastes. ed likes sparta (who blows), i consider hootie and the blowfish a guilty pleasure. we've all got them. given that they are diehard music fans, i dont think you can condemn the band just for liking a group you don't.
5. alicia keyes is a legitimate talent. i dont care for her, but ive no qualms and i respect them for branching out a bit. did you bitch when pearl jam dueted with victoria williams? or when ed played with bryan adams and noel gallagher?
6. pearl jam has also contributed to soundtracks. any band that does this and does videos will tie the two together. not every band has pearl jam's oppositions to videos.
7. i dont know a thing about irish boybands, but they appear in a video. big frickin deal. if the band starts choreographing dance moves and letting other people write their songs, then ill worry that they've gone boy band.
8. the killers is again a matter of taste. i think pearl jam's on crack when they talk up kings of leon or sparta. but there you have it.
9. super bowl performance. that's crappy, no doubt. i didnt watch it. it's the only point i might give you. didnt they do a big 9/11 tribute with it?
10. ah-ha... your REAL reason for the u2 hatred... you dont like their music anymore. they're too soft for you and you want something harder. fine. knock yourself. i never said you had to like them. but own up and admit that they've gone soft and stop acting like you were betrayed or trying to create some objective criteria by which we should all see things your way.
They're not too soft for me..they're too boring. I don't care about heavyness in terms of sound , I care about the emotional impact of music. And U2 used to bring it in spades. Not the case anymore. I never acted like I was betrayed. I'm just calling a spade a spade. They are a very, very, very, very corporate band. And sometimes I can see why they do what they do. Sometimes I can't. You're the one pretending they are still somehow anti-establishment. They are the establishment. They are adult contemporary. They might as well be Bill Gates.
And as far as the Destiny's Child and Alicia Keyes points: I actually agree, Alicia Keyes is extremely talented, and so is Destiny's Child in their way (i'm not a fan of either)..but when was the last time U2 actually went out on a limb and helped out a decent rock band that could actually use the press? U2 seem only to associate with bands who already have success, eg. Green Day. Does Bono go home and listen to Destiny's Child? If so, he has shitty taste. Same thing with the Killers...they were already the buzz band and suddenly they tour with U2 and Bono claims they are the next great thing (even though the Killers suck and will be forgotten very soon). That Irish boyband that was in sweetest thing...did they need the help? Or should the "we come from punk rock" guys in U2 rather have helped a struggling real band with some talent? When was the last time Bono turned you onto a really good band that you knew very little about?
Bottom line for me, is that they are more of a business model now than a rock band. They create extremely safe, digestible music. They don't rub anyone the wrong way. They basically cater to everyone. Which is fine. That's their goal. They admit that's their goal. They want everyone to like their music, buy their music. So the less challenging the music, the more heavy handed the marketing, the more people will like you. Simple as that. I don't see how you can deny that. I don't see how you can't agree that their primary goal is extending the U2 brand, not making awe inspiring music, which they used to do. They are very clever though, at acting like they are still somewhat anti-establishment/dangerous/rock n roll, while still striving for mainstream success. They walk that line very well. Its brilliant. Too bad the music isn't.0 -

U2 kicks ass. Always have, and always will. End of story."I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

I don't know about that. I saw them in Montreal in 2001, and it was quite simply the greatest rock show I've ever witnessed. But you're lucky to have seen them back then. That must have been a killer show. Was that in '85??"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. Bit like U2.
Fair enough if people like them, but i think they have gotten progressively worse over the years, and i didnt partciularly like their earlier stuff to begin with. I think their new material is horrendous to be honest.People say im paranoid. Well, they dont say it, but i know that's what they are thinking.0 -

Well, thanks for that. I'm sure the millions of people who bought their album, and the millions of people that go to their sold-out shows, will disagree with you. But Pearl Jam is just getting better and better right (Riot Act, Binaural)?0 -

Jesus man, i was only kidding on!
And i love binaural and the newest self titled album. Riot act isnt my favourite if im honest but still has a few good songs.
I dont mind if people disagree with me, as i said, fair enough if people like them, its their ears not mine.
Im not speaking for the millions of people who like them am i? Its just my personal opinion.
Also, im not sure if this is what you meant, but the fact millions of people buy their albums and go to their shows doesnt mean much, same can be said of britney spears or pussycat dolls and i still dont like them.People say im paranoid. Well, they dont say it, but i know that's what they are thinking.0 -

And I like the song, yet U2 doesnt really do it for me anymore, I really digged everything up to Pop, after that it sorta all sounds the same, still good, but not my thing.your light's reflected now0 -

It's been awhile since I viewed this thread, I actually lost track of it.
I thought I'd comment, I think the funniest thing about the reaction to my initial comment is that I said nothing about not liking U2. I was just stating that it sounded like a song that would blend well with a lovey-dovey scene in a movie or an emotionally driven commercial.
I, indeed, am a fan of U2's work. I do believe the quality has been sub-par in the past few years, but they still rock harder than most younger bands out there, so I'll give them that.

i just get fucking sick of people acting like U2 have sold their entire catalogue to ford. they had ONE song on ONE commercial and people act like they've gone the way of william shatner. it mainly bothers me becos most of those people didnt bat an eye when the who put their songs on csi and any corporate campaign that tickled their bumhole. the hypocrisy pisses me off. if EVER there was a definition of coroporate schilling whore, it is pete townshend and the who. but the people on here won't own up to that, they choose to focus on the fact that U2 did one commercial in their entire career becos they thought the product was incredible and they didnt even accept a dime for it.
now, that said, their new song is boring. really boring. but whatcha gonna do? not everyone can break new ground with every release like the beatles did.0 -

yeah, but he's irish. they love to do that sort of thing. i think half the time he's just too earnest for the general public to swallow, and the rest of the time he's just having fun playing up to the self-involved rock star thing. any time ive seen a real sit down intimate interview with him, he's very self-deprecating and warm and funny. i think he just gets a kick out of how much attention he gets and tries to have fun with it.0 -

When Bono writes a song as good as Baba O'Riley, then we can start ignoring his corporate tendencies, deal?0 -

those being? aside from the ipod commercial?
face it, pete and the who have been grabbing their ankles for corporate dollars for decades and we all know it. but you all sit here and kiss their asses for it becos they're ed's fav band so you have to like them too (i guess in case you ever meet ed and he says "oh, you're poster X? you dont like the who, i cant talk to you). sure baba o'riley is a classic, but U2 have had plenty of classic songs themselves. they're just not to your liking. but instead of admitting you just dont like them, you feel compelled to "justify" it and act like it's some sort of objective measurement by talking about (totally inaccurate) accusations of U2 being "corporate" or something. it's quite pitiful. if you'd all just admit you think the band sucks and dont care for their music, id have no qualms. it isn't for everybody. but to try to rationalize it as "bono is a corporate whore becos he does commercials" (did one, for free) yet you get a hard-on at the thought of pete townshend despite the fact that he's sold more songs to commercials than most musicians will ever write is fucking ridiculous and a total double standard. people just love to hate U2.0
