    My dad first inspired me to play when i was about 10. I think he was a bit cheesed when i surpassed him within about four years.

    also the movie singles helped a bit, when you see matt dillon playing guitar over hendrix's grave......i thought about how you could walk around with a guitar and bring it anywhere and play and look cool......i've been trying to look cool ever since

    I've got a million. Initially it was Slash like someone else said above, Page, Van Halen, Hendrix, Gossard, McCready, Cantrell, DeLeo, etc.

    Now this is kind of funny. The last band that I saw live before I picked up the guitar was the Goo Goo Dolls back in '99! I know it sounds stupid considering my influences, but I saw that show and the very next day I was like "I'm sick of this air-guitar shit! I have to know how to play for real" so I went to guitar center and bought a piece of shit ibanez electric and a small amp. The rest is history. So I guess I have to give props to John Reznik (sp?) from the Goo Goo Dolls for writing some surprisingly tasty riffs.

    For me, it would have to be Kim Thayil and just listening to Soundgarden in general..

    Jerry Cantrell is another big influence.

    Then Dave Mustaine (but he also almost made me quit because his stuff is tough)
    Kirk Hammett (who didn't grow up in the 80's and get isnpired by early Metallica).
    In late high school and college I sort of dropped it a little.

    Then I got into old Eric Clapton and the Beatles.
    Then I discovered Johnny Marr and the Smiths and it broadened my musical horizons.

    A few years ago I started picking up the PJ bootlegs and Stone and Mike got me back into playing heavy again and have been ever since.

    i did 2 years of piano lessons first (cos thats what my mum wanted me to play) and i stopped when i was about 11. then when i was like 16 i just picked up a guitar and taught myself (id wanted to learn one for years).

    i was mainly influenced because most songs HAVE a guitar, not a piano. so i thought "thats the instrument for me"

    but i first learnt easier more acoustic songs, especially neil young, and the harvest album, and a lot of beatles stuff. thay were my main beginning guitar inspirations.

    but now, i have a lot more guitar heroes.

    i remember the moment very clearly ........ i was fourteen, and sat on the beach during lunch break from school, listening to say hello to heaven with a friend .......... i loved the bass in that song, and said to my friend 'i'd love to do this' ........ only took me another 4 years to get hold of a bass, but that was the moment i'll remember. happy times x

    Mid nineties alternative rock, in general

    obviously PJ was my favorite band but i was more drawn to playing simple, cool riffs from around 94-96ish when i got started. PJ wasn't easy and tab wasn't readily available to me at that time

    I used to play the Star Spangled Banner on the high E string and thought that I was Jimi Hendrix-ette :shock:

    it is cool to go back and see some of the old names.

    mine were hetfield, rhoads, dylan, and of course when i first heard smells like teen spirit and alive it was a turing point in my playing. stone is probably the biggest inspiration since i am a rhythm player.

    I was really unlucky, then lucky. I got a guitar for my 16th birthday (in 1988) and was inspired mostly by Alex Lifeson. Then three months later I totalled my 240Z and was in the hospital for a week, then in bed for a month. I had nothing else to do but practice guitar. Without the accident I most likely would have gotten frustrated and quit.

    You see, guitar is one of those things where you have to just keep at it and keep at it for a month or two before you develop the muscle memory and finger strength (and calluses) to play. If you can endure that you WILL get good enough to at least play by the campfire or impress a girl. I feel EVERYONE is crap for the first month at least but those who stick with it will get good.

    When I saw Stone start SOLAT unplugged. I picked up my dads acoustic and that Fmaj chord was the first I ever learned.
