Les Paul or E-335

I'm looking at getting a new guitar. I own a strat now, but I want to move into the world of Gibson-style guitars, and I'm debating on getting a Les Paul or a E-335 "Dot" style guitar. Obviously, Pearl Jam is a big influence, but so are band like The Beatles and Zeppelin and some other stuff. I've played both at a guitar shop, but not enough to iron out the decision. The question: I like the rocking capabilities of the Les Paul, but the semi-acoustic clean tone of the "Dot" style. Can you get a good rock distorted tone from an Epiphone Dot, or would it be better to go with a Les Paul.
I'm leaning towards one right now, I would just appreciate your input as well.
Thanks for your help!

The Paul will tend to be a bit edgier, and the Dot a bit fuller and more open-sounding. And yes, you can totally get a great overdriven/distorted sound out of a ES-style guitar. Both are great, and you can't go wrong with one or the other. I say, Follow your heart, young Skywalker!...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.0

Gracias, Obi Wan. I'm leaning towards the Paul right now, but I like the acoustic aspects of the Dot. I dunno I dunno I dunno. 'Tis a question for the ages I suppose. Perhaps someday I will have both...........tank you veddy much0 -
I got a Gibson Les Paul Special SL a while back and I love this guitar. Les Paul's are great. Make sure that you try to get one with the neck you like because some of the necks are thicker than others. I prefer the 60's slim taper neck. Les Pauls are great. My fav guitars.0

Both would be cool... of course, we all wish we could have one of each. If you like the fit and feel of the LP, go for it! Can't go wrong with a Les Paul......and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.0 -
It's your back mate. I've got a LP Studio right now and I'm hoping for a 335 to trade.. Play them both and see which one is more comfy.
I personally love both guitars but because of my love for blues I probably lean towards the 335's right now. I love hollowbodies very open tons of sustain.
Then again I'd never tell anyone not to buy a Les Paul.
May the schwartz be with you.My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.0 -

Down the street, Schwartz was getting his....
Anybody see Elf? Notice that Ralpie (Peter Billingsly) was one of the elves, the one talking to Will Farrell about his Etch-A-Sketch making capabilities. I thought it was kind of funny.
And speaking of Elves, perhaps they are creating my Les Paul up at the North Pole right now.........Santa always knows more about what you want than you do....tank you veddy much0 -

Dontcha just feel the love?
Les Paul's are cool.....but I like the Dot style. Question: Do you get a bunch more feedback with a semi-hollow? I never have had a chance to really crank one to tell?tank you veddy much0 -

yes, more feedback is a possibility, but i found it to be nicely controllable. it wasn't heinous microphonic feedback. it was harmonic.0 -
it all depends on the the type of style's you play.i remember you...i was gonna vote for you one time...but voting isn't cool so i stayed home and got trashed on listerine.0

on a Grestch sure something bigger but not on a 335. Just sweet sustain with controllable feedback.
Tom Morello plays an Ibanez Artstar which is basically a copy of an ES-335My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.0 -

Those Ibanez units are pretty good, actually... my friend wants a ES-333 or -335, but got an Art instead (money, our evil friend) and he's been really pleased with it. You could always get a used Epi Les Paul and a hollowbodied Ibanez for about the price of a single Gibson......and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.0 -

Ah, money, so very evil.....Gibson's a Gibson. Hmmm. How do the Ibanez's compare? I guess if Tom Morello is happy with his, then I have no reason to doubt it.tank you veddy much0
