    It took almost 30 years but I finally got around to watching this one. This afternoon I will finally watch Episode II for the 1st time.

    Saw this on Friday. A hell of a lot of fun if you love the fights in movies like The Raid. While not as good as that one, this was really good, with lots of surprising fight choreography that felt new. I recommend.

    Hmm, just had a long talk with my buddy about this one.

    It’s a good movie, but not the best. It is not really a big tent pole Spielberg type movie. It is exciting, but light on the action and adventure. One short car chase, and a pretty cool train stunt.

    The movie definitely ends, but the story is so big in scope, that it is not really wrapped up so to speak. The performances from everyone are pretty good.

    They start the movie right in the middle of the plot, and then tease out what is happening as you go. Pretty good way of engaging you, but it does start to tire a bit.

    I hate spoiling, so I won’t do that , but everyone knows it’s about disclosing the knowledge of aliens. They skirt by some really thorny moral issues surrounding this cover up in the movie that would have been very interesting to delve into, but the murky morals are mentioned and then moved past. Also, there is not much world building in regards to some alien technology used in the film. Almost, like it’s an all purpose Macguffin.

    If you don’t go big with the alien story and want to keep it about what would the knowledge of aliens do to the psyche of the world population and how would we handle that as a species and our separate cultures, that would have been thematically more interesting. They touch on that, but not enough.

    There is also some cool points made about how we all consume media and how that gets siloed so that we aren’t all united or talking with each other about it.

    The final ten minutes or so are pretty gripping as they grapple with the themes I mentioned. But I wish that had been more the focus of the movie, instead of turning it into a chase movie (which, frankly, needed more chase).

    Also, the aliens amongst us angle doesn’t quite play out the way I expected.


    It’s worth a watch, but definitely not top tier Spielberg. But it’s not a bomb either.
