Coming to Blu-ray, DVD, and select Digital Platforms April 3rd 2026 from MVD Visual

Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story is not your regular rock doc.

After all, brothers Jeff and Steve McDonald were never a regular rock band. They were the group with the eleven-year-old bass player threading their way through the hardcore punk scene only to reappear, just a few years later, as masters of power pop hooks and bubblegum fun. They were Partridge Family fanatics who influenced the entire grunge crowd. They were long-haired punks with stage costumes that would have put even the boldest glam rockers to shame.

These sound like contradictions, but Redd Kross is the unfettered expression of two brothers and their rock'n'roll dream so exclusively informed by a visceral love of music and pop culture that it couldn't help but defy genres and conventions, evolve without pause and survive both the music industry and a kidnapping.

A line-up of talking heads straight outta Lollapalooza tells stories you would swear were made up. But Jeff and Steve McDonald were already larger than life when they were in their teens, and the adventures that followed reflect just that. Through more than four decades Redd Kross have been nothing but happily, outrageously and courageously themselves. Director Andrew Reich (Emmy Award-winning writer on the hit TV Show Friends) conducted dozens of new interviews and had unfettered access to home movies and archival footage featuring THE RUNAWAYS, X, NIRVANA and GUNS N ROSES and members of the SOUNDGARDEN, PEARL JAM, THE MUFFS, MELVINS, GO-GOs and BLACK FLAG.

This is the definitive story of the most eclectic, unpredictable, thrilling and heartwarming band you never knew.

The Blu-ray and DVD editions come packed with bonus materials, including a commentary track with Jeff McDonald, Steven McDonald, and Andrew Reich. The first pressing of the Blu-ray is limited to 2,000 units and comes housed in an o-ring with a booklet and 2 of 4 randomly inserted postcards.

Catch Redd Kross on tour now!

Pre-order at MVD Shop, OLDIES.com, Amazon, or your favorite nationwide retailer.

“This 90-minute documentary delivers in every way hoped for. Featuring the legendary McDonald Brothers telling their amazing story as one of the greatest American bands of our lifetime, Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story is engrossing, fun, and moving. […] [It] might begin in the seventies, but it feels especially necessary in 2026” Jeremy Richey, Nostalgia Kinky

OUT TODAY: the Blu-Ray and DVD editions of Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story.
The Blu-Ray is a 2-disc special edition in a slipcase including a booklet and two postcard reproductions of vintage Redd Kross flyers. There are four different designs in all, and each Blu-Ray will come with two randomly selected postcards.
As for the bounty of extras you’ll find inside…
    - A commentary track with Jeff McDonald, Steven McDonald and director Andrew Reich spilling all sorts of tea.
    - A fifteen-minute featurette on the cult classic films, Desperate Teenage Lovedolls and Lovedolls Superstar. Everything you’ve wanted to know about the origins and making of these Super 8 masterpieces, straight from the filmmakers and stars.
    - A featurette on the infamous 1979 Polliwog Park show, where Redd Kross (then called The Tourists) and Black Flag first introduced hardcore to some unsuspecting Manhattan Beach picnic-goers.
    - A featurette on the almost equally infamous 1982 Santa Monica Pier show that turned into a Suicidal Tendencies vs. Redd Kross tropical fruit fight. This features incredible, never before seen photographs by Marla Watson.
    - A full, almost one-hour long video recording of a 1989 Redd Kross rehearsal at the legendary Naz Pad. There are some clips of this rehearsal in the film, but the full thing, especially the blistering versions of Third Eye songs, will blow minds. That’s not to mention the Velvet Underground and Judas Priest covers.
    - Forty minutes of The McDonald Brothers Unplugged. Jeff and Steve, Jeff’s basement, acoustic guitars, a director calling out requests. Absolute musical magic.
    - Jeff and Steve digging through Jeff’s record closet and talking about The Partridge Family, Ace Frehley, Tater Totz, Cher, The Donnas, Audrey Landers, Kim Fowley, Kim “Tootie” Fields as well as some obscure bands called The Ramones and The New York Dolls.
    - Jeff and Steve each giving their version of the story of how and why they changed their name from Red Cross to Redd Kross.
    - A 30 minute interview with the late and much missed Kim Shattuck of The Muffs telling tales of Redd Kross exploits.
    - Steve McDonald breaking down his thoughts on every Redd Kross record.
    - The entire rehearsal of the briefly reformed lineup of The Tourists, with original drummer John Stielow and original guitarist Greg Hetson.
    - The entire concert that The Tourists played in 2015 at a benefit for former Redd Kross member, Dez Cadena.
    - Speaking of Dez Cadena, an extended feature with Dez and Ron Reyes telling the story of their friendship, tales from The Church and more!
    - a 4K version of Redd Kross’s appearance on the cable-access show Media Blitz from 1984. Features their full interview and full performances of Deuce, Blow You a Kiss in the Wind, and Ballad of a Lovedoll, with the Robert Hecker-Dave Peterson lineup.
    - A Q&A with Jeff, Steve and Andrew Reich moderated by music journalist Lyndsey Parker after the 11/11/24 screening in Santa Monica.
    - Roman Coppola’s 16mm footage for the “1976” video
All of that, PLUS expanded features on:
    The band’s beginnings
    The Posh Boy Era
    Teen Babes from Monsanto
    Neurotica
    Spirit of ‘76
    Third Eye
*Because of space limitations, the DVD doesn’t have all of these, but it’s still packed with features, like the commentary track; the Lovedolls, Polliwog Park, and Santa Monica Pier featurettes; The Tourists reunion; Media Blitz; Digging in Jeff's record closet; and more!

The documentary once described as “a colorful and chirpy clusterf*ck of garage punk, glam, power pop, metal, candour, bullheadedness and wild adventures” is now yours.
    Pop it in. Rock out.
