Storing posters in a portfolio, or other way than in the tubes..

I have most of my posters (the ones not framed) in the tubes. I imagine they all have been trashed.

But is anyone here have them in a portfolio, or is there another cool way to store them - so that one also can check them out from time to time?

I have a zip up portfolio but it's a job to get it out and look at them but easier than tubes which you obviously never see them. And storing flat is best for them .

You just have them "loose" in there then I presume? Not one with plastic pockets/"pages" that you so to speak?

I have that Denmark 2012 Todd McFarlane poster, and it is such a beast in size... it's too big... I might have to have it up just because it doesn't fit. But my apartament is too small for it also.. haha.

  • I have 4 of the 18x24 Itoya portfolios and they are great for storing posters flat each page holds 2 posters with acid free paper between. For the larger and odd size posters I use 24x36 plastic holders ( similar to baseball card holder just super large) with acid free paper inside to protect them. I didn't like the 24x36 portfolios as they were very soft and bendy . My place is too small for a proper flat file so I do it this way. I found them on Amazon. Hope this helps

I use a baroque portfolio for 18 x 24 posters. They are great. You can buy extra sheets through them as well.

Maybe I have been thinking too much about having a "one size fits all" solution. And should try to store the standard sized/Smaller ones. And the Spawn-one and other odd ones I will still have to keep separate then...

Get them in a portfolio or two. The issue with storing them in tubes is that they take forever to then flatten if you ever want to display them. If they are rolled then you also increase the risk of the ink cracking etc

Yeah. I have been stressed about that for many-many years.

Will buy a portfolio this weekend. Go to the art store.

Portfolios are great, flat files are too, but can be both expensive and take up a lot of space. The other option is an archival box to store prints in - both cost effective, but also easily slides under a bed for storage. Many makes out there, but below is one I saw described on Amazon which seems very similar to one I bought from an art supplies store many years ago.

Golden State Art, Archival Storage Box, Acid-Free Drop Front Museum Box with Metal Edge for Storing Artwork Photos Documents Prints Arts and Crafts

At least got some ARCHIVAL QUALITY ACID FREE A1 plastic pockets/sleeves... to put them in.

But man, being rolled up for up to over a decade... Who knows if they will ever be flat again.

They will flatten. Got heavy books? Use those on top of acid free kraft paper above the prints. Leave them pressing for a week or two.

I'd only be concerned if you see ripples, creases, cracks in the ink, etc. Otherwise it might take some time but they'll flatten eventually.

(Another benefit of the portfolios is that the weight from the pages, other posters, and folio itself help with an even flattening.)

For my non-standard ones, I just put them in a frame but not actually hung up, more like stacked under the bed or behind the clothes in my closet.  When I have time, I plan to inventory them, look up value, and post them for sale, whether as bundles or solo. I have too many, like so many others on this board.

    Indeed. That works too.
