    Anyways.. this book had a great 1st chapter

    Last book I read was a little life. I had to take a brief pause from reading, it’s one of those books where it just stays with you for a while

    After recently reading Island of the Dolphins, then Bowden's Frog Mountain Blues (a natural history of the Catalina Mountains), I'm doing another kids classic that I somehow missed.  So far, liking it well enough:

    As a teacher, I highly recommend Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. I cannot recommend it enough. It is truly amazing.

    Sadly, I gave up on Secret Garden.  The frequent use of Broad Yorkshire dialect petty much killed it for me about 50 pages in.  But Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry sound like another great one I've missed.  I'll go for that next, thanks!

    No problem! If you like it, the author has a number of books that track the family throughout their lives. As a fifth grade teacher, I used to read it to my kids every year. It’s a wonderful book that details a difficult time in history while showing a beautiful, strong family who lives through it.

    Awesome!  Thanks for encouraging good reads for kids.  I am forever grateful for the teachers I had like you who turned me on to good books.  That has been a blessing all my life (and only a curse in that there has never been quite enough shelf space, lol!)

    I always thought this one can be a very good kids book (for some;))

    There should be at least one pupil in every 5th grade classroom who can read his/her new favourite book with it.

    <250 pages and the main character is 10 years old + 
    I remember one moment towards the end what made the book clear worth reading for older people, but I don’t remember what is was. Actually this book was a candidate to reread during the covid era - as Barker’s Weaveworld (nothing for kids) - but that never happened.

    228 out of 877 pages read. Slowly approaching the fantasy zone, but still no clue what’s going on there, except there should be gold to find (and the fairy from the title).

    Not sure I read Weaveworld. Maybe I’ll give it a go. I did read some Barker, like Great and Secret Show and the sequel. Pretty bonkers books, but good!

    Weaveworld was very good.
    The Great and Secret Show is one of my favorite books ever.  Reread every few years.

    511 pages into Lonesome Dove and I can say with confidence, this book is awesome. 

    I’m so excited to finish it.

    Considering my admiration and respect for Kurt Vonnegut, and the reputation of Ambrose Bierce.  I'd have to say that is right on.  I also have to admit (with some embarrassment)  that I am a twerp.  I must amend that soon, lol! I'm pretty sure I have a copy of Bierce's stories in the stacks somewhere.
