Some out of town friends in the city this weekend and are looking to meet up Sunday to watch the game.
Gotta figure everywhere will be more crowded than usual. Only time I've watched games in bars in Center City we were in and out of places on 2nd street.
Any suggestions for places you might look for a group of 4 if you were looking to be able to sit and drink/eat?
Have a bunch of places I like but was curious what the city denizens might suggest/if there was anyplace that might be a good spot to not ve jammed out the door.
(Or, if just shit outta luck and fight for a table anywhere.)

Sitting, eating, and watching the game? I stay pretty local, and I'm not sure if these are Niner fans? If so that might change the calculus more to Center City? And for that I think you can figure that out.Though I'm sorry but I found this funny:

But I'll say - if you want my local rec it would be SouthHouse over at 13th & Shunk. I haven't been in a minute but their food was always decent and they had a ton of TVs and wasn't a super douchy sports bar. Maybe they've gotten more popular since I moved 3/4 of a mile away lol

But they were always my default for Football Watching with good food and good beer.

Some others that are good and might be closer to CC:

I know people like Founding Fathers but I'm 'eh' on it.

O'Neal's on 3rd & South is good.

Jaxx's on Moyamensing & Federal.

My favorite watering hole near me is Fountain Porter but I doubt there will be seats at the bar, unless you get there early.

I'm giving mostly South Philly recs because I'm bias and don't leave a 3/4 mile radius of my house.

SF defense found a way to hang in there against Seattle but that was at home and against Darnold....not in Philly and against Jalen and Saquon.

As rival clubs are beginning to view the Philadelphia Phillies as Bo Bichette’s most serious suitor, a development even the Phillies would not have envisioned last month, the momentum toward a surprising match is difficult to ignore. The two sides met Monday on a video call, and although those involved declined to reveal details, multiple sources briefed on the meeting said both parties emerged with optimism.

Within the industry, the general sentiment is that whenever Dave Dombrowski targets a star player, he’ll find a way to land him. That is an oversimplification; Dombrowski, the club’s president of baseball operations, is not undefeated. When the Phillies want a player in a competitive market, they typically wield years as their separator. This, executives from rival clubs have cited in recent days, is why the Phillies’ late entrance into the Bichette market cannot be dismissed.

The Boston Red Sox might be more desperate. The Los Angeles Dodgers might be mightier. The New York Yankees might have a better sales pitch. But the Phillies might be the only team willing to extend to six, seven or eight years to sign Bichette.

Dombrowski is adept at convincing ownership groups to reconsider budgets and expectations when unforeseen circumstances arise. This might be the ultimate test; even with roster rearranging and some payroll dumping, the Phillies would shoot well past their 2026 estimates if they were to acquire Bichette. This whole exercise would require heavy lifting that is rare for January, including a likely farewell to several lineup mainstays. It has not yet deterred the Phillies. And Bichette is listening.

It’s unclear whether the two sides discussed contract parameters during the call or if the Phillies have made an offer. The meeting was expected to be a broader feeling-out session for both sides. Bichette got married two weekends ago; his market took a backseat to real-life developments this offseason. It should accelerate now.

The contract length for Bichette, who does not turn 28 until March, looms as a significant detail. Only two free-agent deals for position players across Major League Baseball in the last two offseasons were signed for more than five years. (Both, Juan Soto and Willy Adames, were under 30 years old.) The Dodgers have lurked in the higher end of this free-agent market with shorter-term scenarios that carry bigger annual salaries. That structure is appealing to some players; it might be a harder sell now, with the sport veering toward a potential lockout by MLB’s owners in December and so much unknown about the market whenever that freeze ends.

The Red Sox, such a logical fit for Bichette, were outbid on Alex Bregman when their No. 1 priority was to retain him. Boston was reportedly willing to extend to five years to re-sign Bregman, albeit with significant deferrals paid out years from now. Still stinging from losing Bregman, they could pivot with an aggressive pitch to Bichette. But over the previous decade, Boston has signed only one free agent to a contract of at least six years. That deal, to Trevor Story, included a player opt-out clause after the fourth year. The last time Boston signed a free agent to a deal of at least six years without opt-out clauses was Carl Crawford’s seven-year contract before the 2011 season.

Philadelphia has signed players to three such deals in the last six years. Two of them, 11 years to Trea Turner and seven years to Aaron Nola, were with Dombrowski in charge. The Yankees, by comparison, have signed two hitters (Aaron Judge and DJ LeMahieu) to contracts of five or more years in the last decade.

The Phillies have not tapped into the league-wide trend of deferring money. They have used it as a mechanism in certain situations, but not on a large scale. Often, the Phillies have viewed their way of deferring money as spreading the total guarantee over a longer term. Once, during the Bryce Harper negotiations in 2019, front-office officials floated the concept of a 20-year deal that would have paid him his desired $330 million but lessened the annual average value (AAV) so the Phillies could better manage potential luxury tax bills. They settled on 13 years for Harper, who currently has the 33rd-highest AAV in MLB for the 2026 season.

They went to 11 years on Turner and seven on Nola for similar reasons. The only time the Phillies have pursued a short-term, high-AAV structure was in 2024 for Zack Wheeler’s three-year, $126 million extension. That was done only because it is what the player wanted; the Phillies would have preferred a longer term.

If the Red Sox were unwilling to go beyond five years for Bregman, who was integral to their clubhouse and plans, they might be willing to do it for Bichette because he is four years younger. Analytical models place a heavier weight on Bichette’s age. He is one of the youngest top free agents in this class; his former team, the Toronto Blue Jays, is expected to move on from Bichette.

The best recent comparison might be Adames, who last winter signed a seven-year, $182 million contract with the San Francisco Giants. Adames, who played his first season of that deal at age 29, was signed as a shortstop. Bichette’s camp could argue that he’s a more valuable hitter than Adames, and a year younger, while interested teams could argue Bichette will be playing a less-premium position once he moves off shortstop as expected.

If Bichette takes a five-year deal, he would re-enter free agency going into his age-33 season, which has proven to be a less lucrative time for many free agents. A seven-year term would carry him through 34. That’s one reason for him to consider a longer term. It’s also why the Phillies might not fear wielding the years; that is a much different proposition than signing Turner through his age-40 season.

The twilights of these long-term deals might be bitter. It usually is. That has not stopped the Phillies in previous negotiations. And it is why, once they saw a potential opening with Bichette, the rest of the league raised its eyebrows.
