I Believe in Dave Krusen
I remember when I got my first copy of Ten, which was after I got Vs, incidentally. So, my first exposure to the band was actually Dave Abbruzzese. And I remember being confused looking at the CD, which not only had the songs listed on it, but the songwriters, and I saw a name that was unfamiliar to me:
Krusen.
Not a whole lot of internet research you can do in 1993, so I cobbled together what I could from magazine articles. I learned about the Spinal Tap-like revolving drummer's seat for the band. And while at the time, Dave A. was my favorite drummer, I was very curious about where the band would be with the original Dave.
Vs. may have been my first exposure to Pearl Kam, but Ten brought them to the dance. And the power of that album is still, to this day, undeniable.
To me, Vs. was made during pretty much the apex of recording technology as far as how clear a record can sound. I don't believe it has been matched, or surpassed to this day (some other noteworthy selections: The Shins 'Wincing the Night Away, Arcade Fire's "Neon Bible" & "The Suburbs", Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories")
So, to go back and have Ten, and the way it has this bluesy groove under the guise of late 80's/early 90's power rock. All with the undeniable punkiness & funk from all the players involved. It's very much a missing link record.
And that's in no small part to it's rhythm section: Stone, Jeff, and Dave Krusen. Yes, I know Stone is perfectly capable of playing lead and is arguably one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
But when it's time to be in the pocket, Mike is the gunslinger, and Stone is the rhythm. The very foundation of PJ's sound is in that groove, that deep garden of sound.
It didn't just come from out of nowhere, either. Stone & Jeff had two records in 2 years to help get it right: Apple & ToTD. So, Dave Krusen had the unenviable task of stepping up to provide that support they were looking for.
And he CRUSHED it.
I often need to remind myself the more I learn about the band's history, that it wasn't just one tape that was sent out in 1990... it was 2.
That second tape went to Dave.
And while Matt played Once & Alive on said tape, Dave put his own flair & groove into those songs.
Once. Even Flow. Alive. Why Go. Black. Jeremy. Oceans. Porch. Garden. Deep. Release.
We can all name them by heart, in order (for the most part😅 I sometimes mix up Deep & Porch due to it's notorious encore spot). But that's all Dave Krusen playing those fills.
Various tempos, varying speeds, all drum parts tailored for what each song needs. And played with precision, passion, and intensity.
And that's not even counting songs like Alone, Brother, Wash, or the excellent cover of I've Got a Feeling. Or the demos for Breath and SOLAT.
If you have any doubt that he has lost a step or can't keep up that pace, go back and listen to that Fresno show in 2022. He absolutely NAILED the Ten-era songs on very short notice.
With time & rehearsal, who's to say he can't tackle the whole catalog??
Just for sheer wear & tear, there's probably a few songs that we wouldn't hear live again. Either because they were Matt's, or because they've had their time in the sun.
Running & Whipping are 50/50. The Fixer is most likely retired. Save You & Got Some are gonna be long shots after the DM tour no matter what. But who really knows?
As long as we keep Rearviewmirror, we're golden😂
I've been listening to Candlebox's 'Happy Pills", and it's actually really good. I kind of fell off their train after Lucy in '95, so it was a nice to travel back to an era dominated by Sugar Ray, Korn, and Limp Bizkit, and hear something still grunge-y.
Beyond all of that, I think it's also the best story for the band overall.
Here's a band that's been around for thirty five years. And a guy who hasn't been in the band for thirty five years.
And yet he is no matter what still a very big part of this band's legacy.
If you see a meme of Jesus skateboarding to Even Flow, it's the Dave Krusen version from Ten.
If you see a person on TikTok lamenting about their heartbreak & yearning while 'Black' plays, that's Dave Krusen driving the song behind Ed's famous lyrics.
There are still people discovering Pearl Jam for the first time in the Gregorian calendar year of twenty twenty-five.
And to this day, Ten remains their most consistent & accessible album (and again, I'm a Vs. Guy!)
This next part might hit a little too close to home, but let's be honest: this band will not turn into the Rolling Stones.
I think Ed will always play shows, no matter what. Whether it's Pearl Jam, Earthlings, or just him and a guitar. That man will go til the wheels fall off.
But Stone & Jeff are still punk rock guys. Art-saavy & cultured, but still very much punk rock guys. And Gigaton & Dark Matter proved that the band could still be relevant with vital new music even after they've been inducted in the rock n' roll hall of fame.
Yet, I don't see them heading into TRUE legacy band territory. They won't let it happen.
When this band's time comes, they will go out still at the height of their powers.
Maybe it's a few years, maybe it's 5. Forty years seems like it would be a hell of a career. Who knows, really.
But I do know this: if we only have a short time left, what better story than to finish it with the man who helped create the band's introduction to the world. Who would make a better story than Dave Krusen?
Redemption. Legacy. Full circle.
Krusen.

With all do respect, I disagree. It seems Pearl Jam is about moving forward, not legacy. Dave K sounds great on Ten, but he's not a top-level performer. Performance may not be talked about in PJ world much, but it is very much a part of their music and live show.
Unless he has been secretly bunkering down and leveling-up his musical chops, I don't see Dave K. carrying Pearl Jam the way a Josh Freese or Matt Chamberlain top level musician could.
Exhibit A: Foo Fighters went with Illan Rubin, not because of history, but because of his musical abilities.
I think PJ are in a tougher spot than most realize losing Matt and finding their next drummer.Meadowlands, MSG 1, MSG 2 - '98 Jones Beach NY 1 + 3 - '00 MSG 1 + 2 - '03 Boston Garden - '04 Montreal - '05 Boston Garden 1, Meadowlands 1 + 2 - '06 Mansfield 1 - '08 (EV solo) Boston 1 - '08 Chicago 1 - '09 MSG -'10 Brooklyn 1+2 - '13 Central Park - '15 MSG - '16 Fenway - '16 Wrigley - '16 (RRHOF) Brooklyn - '17 Fenway - '18 MSG - '22 MSG 1 - '240 -
I would also like to have Krusen back, it all comes full circle, this all encompassing trip.Appeared to be an animal, yet so polite.0

Certainly would be a cinematic move, but for me the most important thing would be to find the drummer that will allow them to play all the songs in their catalog (or as close to it as possible) at a high level. If that's Dave K, great. But they did have a chance to bring him back in 94 and 98 and went with others, so I'd be surprised if he was the choice.0

I'll agree with the last part, only out of respect for Matt. He's a Swiss Army Rock n' Roll man.dreamweaver said:With all do respect, I disagree. It's hard to cite FF/NIN as an example, as both Josh Freese & Illan Rubin are both great drummers on the same level.
William Goldsmith would be a fair example, but the main reason you'll never see him back is because of his issues with Dave Grohl (and possibly Nate).
I firmly believe that Dave K. would be a better fit than Matty Chamberlain at this point. Back in the day, he might have been the better drummer, but Dave has had over thirty years to hone his craft.
He's not the same guy he was in 1991. Personally, or professionally.
And it shows when you watch that rock n' roll hall of fame performance, or listen to the Fresno '22 boot.
The only reason he didn't do the whole show is because they called him up on short notice.
He played Ten & SOLAT from memory on a day-of practice session. The dude can handle pressure💪35 years, 35 shows.

The time was right and the opportunity was there to bring the guy who brought Pearl Jam as we know it together in the first place into the band.
Jack is an amazing drummer, but he wasn't a FAST fast player, so to say. He was (and remains) a very Earthy, tribal like drummer. He flexed his muscles with Habit, Given to Fly, MFC, and Hail, Hail.
But songs like Who You Are, Pilate, No Way, and Red Mosquito were really more his flavor.
I think it was also (at the time) an appeasement, as I think Jeff would've taken it personally if the band took Dave K. back over giving Richard Stuverud a chance.
Plus, the reasoning for letting Dave K. go in the first place might very well still been fresh, hence the offer to join Hovercraft instead.
Now that so much time has passed, Dave's not the same guy he was 34 years ago.
He's stronger, a better player, and damn if he didn’t look completely in place the last couple times we've seen them all together.
Plus, it feels like anyone else at this point would just become a footnote for the band. Even if it's someone of stature like a Brad Wilk, or a Stephen Perkins, or even a Chad Smith.
Everyone loves an underdog. Everyone loves a comeback story.
It just so happens, not only would we get a great story, but a damn good drummer.Post edited by Go Animal on35 years, 35 shows.

My concern, regardless of talent, would be age. Drumming is hard on the body. If PJ (hopefully) going to be our generations Rolling Stones, then they might be better served going with a younger drummer. Drummer is the engine of the band. I hope they choose someone that as the energy to do that, and would hopefully have the energy and health to do it for another decade or two.0

I mean, they could very well stretch this thing out to fifty years, but I just don't see that happening.Zod said:My concern, regardless of talent, would be age. Drumming is hard on the body. Hell, The Stones haven't been The Stones since Emotional Rescue & Tattoo You. They're pretty much a Band of Theseus.
With Matt gone, that's the most stress this band can take. Regardless of whether Dave is brought back into the fold, or one of their peers becomes part of the band for its last stretch, I don't see any of the members letting the band become a shadow of itself.
Which also means that if any one of the 4 core members left decides to call it a day? Then that's ballgame. End of the line.
And what a ride it will have been.
So, while another decade or so would be awesome, I don't see it happening.
Whatever comes next in the next 3 to 5 years, let's savor it & enjoy it like there's no tomorrow.Post edited by Go Animal on35 years, 35 shows.

What a fantastic post.
Only thing I want to disagree with is the time left. Not because I think Im right but because I do not ever want to accept there will be a time when this band will not be a thing.
REM kicked me squarely in the knackers once, in fact I recall RATM first throwing in the towel all those years ago.......I want to believe that PJ will be with me into my retirement. No harm in dreaming right?
