As tempo pointed out, it's also setting the stage for similar actions.
You even just touch an umpire while arguing, or throw your batting gloves at him, you face serious consequence in MLB. An immediate ejection, possible fines and suspensions. It's not that they are afraid a batting glove is going to hurt an ump, but it sets a bad precident to allow that in a game. Same with real life too. I think assault was the wrong charge. It's disorderly conduct for sure, but assault was a heavy lift in this instance. Definitely should be consequences, but think about what a regular person would get charged with, DC, maybe, but never assault unless the bread was stale and cut them. Some acts while unacceptable, aren't necessarily criminal either.It's a hopeless situation...0
