So the executive order to pursue criminal charges against people who burn the flag seems like a way to bait a lawsuit to get it back up to the sycophant SCOTUS so they can get the 1989 case flipped in a 6 - 3 decision that will suppress 1st amendment rights. The continued government over reach is astounding.
It's another topic that democrats will lose on though because more Americans agree with him about it then don't. Maybe bible burning bans can be next. Nationalism digs in for the long haul.

“All over the country they’re burning flags,” Trump said in the Oval Office on Monday when he signed the order. “All of over the world they burn the American flag, and as you know, through a very sad court, I guess it was a 5-4 decision, they called it freedom of speech.

Trump also claimed “you burn a flag, you get one year in jail” as he signed the executive order, but the order itself doesn’t include details about a potential jail sentence.

Trump has long advocated for criminalizing flag burning. In 2016, he posted on social media: “Nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag – if they do, there must be consequences – perhaps loss of citizenship or year in jail!”

Most Americans tend to agree with Trump on this issue. Polling conducted by YouGov in 2020 showed nearly half of Americans support making flag destruction illegal, while about one-third believe it’s permissible. An updated YouGov survey from September 2023 found that 59% of Americans now consider burning an American flag during protests to be “always unacceptable”.

There’s a smarter way for Dems to handle this. Sure the poll shows 46-38 supporting the dem position now….although the phrasing above of “just 38%” is typical of  the media  misleading, because trump will use the bully pulpit to make Dems look weak on crime when there will unfortunately or possibly be future high profile crimes in big cities.

the smarter way is to figure out a way to work with trump, to negotiate some help, maybe coordinate some natl guard if the feds help with more police funding.

The dems had no issue when Biden admin screwed up nyc taking federal troops into the subways.

Dems best be careful, the handwriting is on the wall on this one. Let’s hope there are no high profile crimes in cities with dem leadership refusing to work with the president. And trump is really good at making Dems look like the Washington Generals.

people seem to be forgetting how this man works. you try to work "with him" and he takes an even harder line, thinking he didn't demand enough. You can't reason with a snake. You cut its head off.

The authoritarian attack failed against him last year and local leaders in NYC had no issue with federal troops when someone was pulling bidens strings sending troops into the subways

It's interesting so many foreign countries are willing to negotiate deals because they aren't looking to score political points against the Rs.

Certainly not ideal dealing with him as a dem mayor, but it might be better to play the short term game/negotiate as opposed to being on the wrong side of the crime debate if a high profile crime occurs in a city that fought him and declined help

The American People have been fighting for Trump for ten years and when he's gone, the American People will fight in his honor. America voted for authoritarianism and if it had the chance to reconsider it would do it again. Sure, some people will be disloyal, but they will be dealt with swiftly and severely.

    so yes?

Let's give him the years he just won. Try to play his game. And slowly pick the right fights. If there's an authoritarian argument,  take it to federal court, as the court of public opinion just spoke
