I think its way more basic. He's an awkward guy (look at the way he converses or tells "jokes"). All he wants to do is be liked/worshipped. You mix that awkward desperation with being incredibly rich, it creates a toxic persona that has just turned off even more people. Dude continually gets dunked on. Its really just a  modern supervillain origin story. He wants love money and revenge.

It's kind of analogous to the Apprentice. People have been fed the idea that Trump is this brilliant businessperson. Similarly, Elon's been able to promote himself as this amazing visionary. But the bottom line is, most of what both of them are is rich by birthright.

I think the difference is that Trump has always been a dumbass, whereas Elon has sort of fallen down some strange rabbit hole. I don't think he was always entirely altruistic or anything but I think he used to at least just do his thing without acting like a constant victim and being addicted to the praise.
the richest man in the world could never ever be altruistic. one does not amass that kind of wealth if they were doing things for the benefit of other people.

No, but at least he was still doing something useful, which is more than anyone can say about Trump. I wish I could know why Musk lost his mind. Was it really mostly about the drugs??
    he is a sociopath.

every billionaire and every ceo is.
Are Warren Buffet and Bill Gates sociopaths? They don’t strike me as such as they’re giving away major chunks of their fortune, Warren giving $6B away recently.

Also, bozos’ ex, Mackenzie Scott, doesn’t strike me as such because she’s also giving away a lot of money. I also haven’t heard of any of them behaving as a sociopath might.
i take that back. i read a study from a few years ago that said 21% of ceos are sociopaths with up to 50% leaning sociopathic. the percentages were higher in the us. they crave validation, crave recognition, are hugely self centered, have high levels of entitlement, and they do all of this off of the backs of other people. in many cases they screw over large swaths of people to advance their own agenda.

also, normal people do not keep hundreds of millions of dollars more than they need to themselves. they give a lot of it away. the same can be said for these televangelists on tv.

    sociopaths.

I read The Sociopath Next Door which claims 1 of 25 people or 4% is a sociopath. This is for everyone and that 4% don’t have a conscience.

Business schools need to teach and focus on ethics and empathy, although I’m not sure it would have any effect on the 4%, if any of them went to business school, or the 21% as you claim. Basically, they don’t have empathy and don’t give two shits.

Capitalism, with boundaries (not laissez-faire), is the only economic system that has ever worked successfully, at scale, for majorities of people.  Yes it creates winners and losers, but Communism has failed, Feudalism, Command economy, keep going down the list and try to find something else that has worked.  We are all the beneficiaries of it.

It's akin to Churchill's famous quote, "democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others that have been tried".  Capitalism is the same.

Agreed. How great would it be for all people in a business, for each member to have real skin in the game! Now that’s a great way to bring everyone onto the same team.

Basically, they don’t have empathy and don’t give two shits.
the root of capitalism is greed and the best of them are ceos. so its no wonder that many of them lean sociopathic. it has to be in your dna. like politicians. you have to be soulless to make your name and living off of the people you are screwing over.

Capitalism is the same.

one thong that MIGHT help is an addendum to fiduciary duty. something along the lines of maximize profit for shareholders WITHOUT impacting labor in the process.
I wish there were more ESOPs out there.

    explain what that is please?
"Employee Stock Ownership Plan".  It's an organizational setup where all employees receive shares (typically proportional to your level or pay) and those shares are given to you over time, with the intention of them being cashed out for retirement after they vest.  It's a way to give employees a stake in a company.  Think of it as a "stock options" for all employees, but at a private company.  Although a public could do an ESOP, it's not that common.

I would buy that if anything he has done over the past few years had made him more liked. But Musk was really very liked for a long time, back when his main concerns appeared to be cutting-edge innovation in transportation and space exploration. Something made him reject that good will, which you say is exactly what he craves, and quickly transitioned from a widely admired visionary to a political supervillain. I find it to be a very, very strange evolution that happened fairly suddenly. If his goal was to become more liked and worshipped, he literally did all the things to ensure he lost all that.
