It's kind of analogous to the Apprentice. People have been fed the idea that Trump is this brilliant businessperson. Similarly, Elon's been able to promote himself as this amazing visionary. But the bottom line is, most of what both of them are is rich by birthright.

I think the difference is that Trump has always been a dumbass, whereas Elon has sort of fallen down some strange rabbit hole. I don't think he was always entirely altruistic or anything but I think he used to at least just do his thing without acting like a constant victim and being addicted to the praise.
the richest man in the world could never ever be altruistic. one does not amass that kind of wealth if they were doing things for the benefit of other people.

No, but at least he was still doing something useful, which is more than anyone can say about Trump. I wish I could know why Musk lost his mind. Was it really mostly about the drugs??

Also, bozos’ ex, Mackenzie Scott, doesn’t strike me as such because she’s also giving away a lot of money. I also haven’t heard of any of them behaving as a sociopath might.

I've been in this discussion of number of times in a number of places.  My viewpoint about billionaires is that some are better than others, some are worse.  Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are better because the donate a lot of money to good causes.  But the problem is with the fact that they are billionaires in the first place.  A person can only become a billionaire at the expense of, and often the misery of others, as well as at the expense of the health of the planet.  Being mega rich always causes more harm that it does good.

It’s an interesting question. He will of course blame “woke” and to some extent he’s angry about his son transitioning . But is that enough to do the things he’s done?  My most cynical side thinks he was really wanted to kill both competition for defense contracts and the oversight by the govt. Supporting Trump was a means to that end. It was a huge gamble and it paid off, but not sure he anticipated the blowback from his customer base.

I still wonder who reached out first...did trump reach out to Musk with some sort of "help me get elected and I'll make it worth your while" or did Musk cook this up himself?

It seems like Musk was doing ok under Biden so I'm really curious about that.

I think part of his recent motivation is about government contracts and scrutiny. He knows Trump's a buffoon, but he also knows they can use each other to a great extent.

That all said, something seems to have broken in his brain. He's obsessed with perceptions, like the story that left the Super Bowl because Biden's Tweet was outperforming his or when his staff considered a wellness check after he was booed at a Dave Chapelle show. He seems quite fragile and while that's always probably been there, I think the more he put himself out there publicly, the more he felt he had to control the narrative. He doesn't seem built for public scrutiny. (I say this as someone probably not built for public scrutiny).

So if you want to be praised without question, go MAGA. Once you're all in on Trump, you have 100 million people that will find you infallible. And while another 50 million will hate you, when you own the premier (mis)information source in the world, you can pretend that away.

I'm not sure whether his having a trans child led to his crusade against wokeness or whether his jumping on the anti-wokeness bandwagon led him to declare that his son has died. Either way, though, I think fragility is a huge factor here. It's astonishing how insecurity and being a victim are seen as strength nowadays from people that used to decry victimhood.

I think its way more basic. He's an awkward guy (look at the way he converses or tells "jokes"). All he wants to do is be liked/worshipped. You mix that awkward desperation with being incredibly rich, it creates a toxic persona that has just turned off even more people. Dude continually gets dunked on. Its really just a  modern supervillain origin story. He wants love money and revenge.

i take that back. i read a study from a few years ago that said 21% of ceos are sociopaths with up to 50% leaning sociopathic. the percentages were higher in the us. they crave validation, crave recognition, are hugely self centered, have high levels of entitlement, and they do all of this off of the backs of other people. in many cases they screw over large swaths of people to advance their own agenda.

also, normal people do not keep hundreds of millions of dollars more than they need to themselves. they give a lot of it away. the same can be said for these televangelists on tv.

    sociopaths.
I read The Sociopath Next Door which claims 1 of 25 people or 4% is a sociopath. This is for everyone and that 4% don’t have a conscience.

Business schools need to teach and focus on ethics and empathy, although I’m not sure it would have any effect on the 4%, if any of them went to business school, or the 21% as you claim. Basically, they don’t have empathy and don’t give two shits.

Was it really mostly about the drugs??
    he is a sociopath.

every billionaire and every ceo is.
Are Warren Buffet and Bill Gates sociopaths? They don’t strike me as such as they’re giving away major chunks of their fortune, Warren giving $6B away recently.

Also, bozos’ ex, Mackenzie Scott, doesn’t strike me as such because she’s also giving away a lot of money. I also haven’t heard of any of them behaving as a sociopath might.
i take that back. i read a study from a few years ago that said 21% of ceos are sociopaths with up to 50% leaning sociopathic. the percentages were higher in the us. they crave validation, crave recognition, are hugely self centered, have high levels of entitlement, and they do all of this off of the backs of other people. in many cases they screw over large swaths of people to advance their own agenda.

also, normal people do not keep hundreds of millions of dollars more than they need to themselves. they give a lot of it away. the same can be said for these televangelists on tv.

Basically, they don’t have empathy and don’t give two shits.
the root of capitalism is greed and the best of them are ceos. so its no wonder that many of them lean sociopathic. it has to be in your dna. like politicians. you have to be soulless to make your name and living off of the people you are screwing over.

Capitalism, with boundaries (not laissez-faire), is the only economic system that has ever worked successfully, at scale, for majorities of people.  Yes it creates winners and losers, but Communism has failed, Feudalism, Command economy, keep going down the list and try to find something else that has worked.  We are all the beneficiaries of it.

It's akin to Churchill's famous quote, "democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others that have been tried".  Capitalism is the same.

Agreed. How great would it be for all people in a business, for each member to have real skin in the game! Now that’s a great way to bring everyone onto the same team.
