Yeah I don't see any benefit to FL. Shit is falling apart there. Insurance is insane and every so often a hurricane destroys everything.Remember the Thomas Nine !! (10/02/2018)

That's how I see it, as well. This is an apolitical thread so forgetting all of that, sure, there's no snow and little cold, but the humidity is bonkers, the threat (and reality) of weather disasters is about the worst in the country, and given the in-migration and development patterns, I have to imagine any populated area in the state is starting to resemble LA in terms of traffic.Gern Blansten said:Yeah I don't see any benefit to FL. you don't care about humidity/heat when you're that age. My dad kept the thermostat when I was growing up at 68. Now it's close to 80, still wears a fucking sweater in the house. It's crazy, but it happens to all of us.OnWis97 said:

I'm certainly not going to live out my golden years in that hellscape.
It's bad enough I go down there once a year to visit relatives.

Just over the last few years I have had two clients that are close to my age buy retirement homes in FL. One in Cape Coral and one north of Tampa. Both have had their homes gutted by hurricanes.OnWis97 said:

The one north of Tampa is just now getting their home repaired. All drywall waist down was removed due to water damage. All furniture destroyed, etc.
I also just remembered an elderly client that had a home in Bokeelia, FL, that had extensive damage. She was in IN when the hurricane went through and then had to deal with damage assessments remotely. Neighbors were telling her that half her roof was gone, etc. I just can't imagine having to deal with something like that in retirement.Remember the Thomas Nine !! (10/02/2018)

My mother has a couple of old friends that winter(ed) in Florida. In whichever hurricane it was a few years ago, one got away unscathed and one lost their home and now winters in Arizona (which they don't like for whatever reason...lack of ocean?). As a Minnesotan, I certainly see the benefit to getting away from the terrible/long winters we have. But I don't want to spend my golden years dealing with water damage and fighting insurance companies.Gern Blansten said:

yeah fuck that....I would opt for TN or AL. Find a nice apartment or condo and spend the winter there.OnWis97 said:

it seems like living to 80 is the mark where benefits at your full retirement age match cumulative benefits when you wait until age 70.If folks have a 401k that they don’t need to touch if claiming SS early, and it averages 7% return, there is no way to break even by deferring SS, even if we live to 90.0 -

We loved what we saw in Winter Garden. We have narrowed it down to 2 or 3 places, but like I said, we are going to look at a few more in the next few days.Spurs14 said:

The Florida housing is ridiculous. I've watched the prices plummet over the last 12 months. But finding single family homes in the area we want, that DO NOT have HOA, isn't easy. Its a whole different world down there.nicknyr15 said:

Right on! The housing market in Florida is tanking. Im in no hurry to buy. Ill rent a year, make sure we are happy, and then we will make our next move. That’s exciting!! Best of luck. I’m not too far behind. I’m done with nyc. Can’t take the weather anymore amongst many other things. Narrowed down to Melbourne or Stuart Florida. Hoping by December to have an apartment rented. If everything works out and we love it, we’ll be on the hunt for an ocean front condo.SPEEDY MCCREADY said:Heading down to the Orlando area in 2 days. Our house will hopefully be officially up for sale within the next 3-4 weeks. All the major work has been finished. Gonna have a pod delivered and start loading it up with our belongings. Also going to get a small dumpster delivered and load that up with garbage and the furniture that we are not taking with us. Im paying someone to drive the pod down to Florida. The price was much cheaper than I was thinking it would be.
Hopefully the next 3-8 weeks go smoothly.
Im not really worried about the house selling. It’s going to sell quickly.Keep us updated!

Everyone is different. Strange right? I love the heat and humid. Traffic? lol. I can’t get anywhere living in NYC. The traffic is a joke and it’s worse than EVER. Affordability? You cannot rent a shitty (legal) studio for under 2k. Forget about 2 bedrooms. The winter? I’m done. Cannot and will not do one more. I’d rather live through 4 months of Florida summer than 9 months of northeast winter. I’m a coastal guy, I love the ocean. There’s risks everywhere in the world. Every state has issues. It’s all relative to what you want and where you lived before. None of the negative stuff I hear scares me one bit.
Im glad I was born and raised in Brooklyn. Wouldn’t have it any other way. But at this point in my life, I know what makes me happy. I’m lucky to have the means to live the way I feel most happy.
