A group of 19 lawmakers signed a bipartisan letter last week, asking the federal government to halt a plan that aims to kill tens of thousands of barred owls along the West Coast._____________________________________SIGNATURE________________________________________________

The Brazilian skydiver Luigi Cani executed one of the most important jumps of his life in the Amazon.
On this occasion, the holder of the world record for the smallest parachute jump in the world, took more than 100 million seeds - from 27 species of trees native to the local biome - to a remote deforested area in the heart of the Amazon region.
When Luigi got within 6,500 feet of the deforested area, he plunged at 300 km/h, reached the seed box in free fall and released the seeds at the correct height to ensure precise and even distribution.
The seeds collected for the project have a germination rate of over 95% and do not require human intervention to germinate, so in a few years we will see the fruits of this unprecedented action.

I am so grateful Leonard Peltier survived to be free once more. (This relates to more than just climate change, of course, but the search function is, well, whatever, lol!)

Video: Swiss Village Nearly Wiped Out After Glacier Collapse Causes Catastrophic Landslide
Swiss glaciologists attribute the accelerating glacier thaw to climate change, which has increased the risk of such disasters.Edited by: Ritu SinghPublished On May 29, 2025 20:24 pm ISTA catastrophic landslide triggered by the partial collapse of the Birch Glacier buried approximately 90% of Blatten, a small Alpine village in Switzerland's Valais Canton, BBC reported. Dramatic footage from May 28 shows massive dust clouds filling the valley as the glacier collapsed, with a torrent of mud and boulders engulfing the hillsides and much of the village, which had a population of around 300.
Authorities had been warning of a potential collapse for weeks due to visible cracks in the ice, and earlier this month, the village of around 300 residents and livestock was evacuated. One person, a 64-year-old man, remains missing, and officials have reported no deaths so far. The Cantonal Police of Valais said that a search and rescue operation was underway for the missing man. The landslide also buried the Lonza River bed, raising concerns about potential flooding from dammed water flows.

I had a neighbor in the late 1980's who was a professional meteorologist. He told me very nearly what the first part of the article in The Guardian (linked below) said today. So nice to know some of the world is finally catching up. A bit late, world...
"New data from Nasa has revealed a dramatic rise in the intensity of weather events such as droughts and floods over the past five years.
The study shows that such extreme events are becoming more frequent, longer-lasting and more severe, with last year’s figures reaching twice that of the 2003-2020 average."
The only thing my friend might not have been aware of was the steepness of the increase in events, but I doubt he would be surprised to hear about it:
"The steepness of the rise was not foreseen. The researchers say they are amazed and alarmed by the latest figures from the watchful eye of Nasa’s Grace satellite, which tracks environmental changes in the planet. They say climate change is the most likely cause of the apparent trend, even though the intensity of extremes appears to have soared even faster than global temperatures."

From Heather's letter of 7/6/25:
"At least 80 people are dead and more than 40 are still missing in Central Texas after almost a foot (30 centimeters) of rain caused flash floods overnight on Friday. Most of the deaths were in Kerr County, where the Guadalupe River rose 26 feet (8 meters) in 45 minutes, engulfing a Christian girls’ camp.Even as rescuers search for survivors, the disaster has highlighted the dangers of MAGA governance. The steps that left people in the path of the floods on Friday are unclear, but observers are already pointing to the administration's cuts to government as well as the lack of systems that could have provided earlier warnings to those in the path of the floods.
Immediately after the catastrophe became apparent, Texas officials began to blame cuts to the National Weather Service (NWS)—part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)—for causing inaccurate forecasts. The “Department of Government Efficiency” cut about 600 staffers from the NWS. After the cuts, the understaffed agency warned that “severe shortages” of meteorologists would hurt weather forecasting.
All five living former directors of the NWS warned in May that the cuts “[leave] the nation’s official weather forecasting entity at a significant deficit…just as we head into the busiest time for severe storm predictions like tornadoes and hurricanes…. Our worst nightmare is that weather forecast offices will be so understaffed that there will be needless loss of life.”
But former NWS officials maintain the forecasts were as accurate as possible and noted the storm escalated abruptly. They told Christopher Flavelle of the New York Times that the problem appeared to be that NWS had lost the staffers who would typically communicate with local authorities to spread the word of dangerous conditions. Molly Taft at Wired confirmed that NWS published flash flood warnings but safety officials didn’t send out public warnings until hours later."
Does any of this surprise anyone? Do you think the administration cares about those people?
Buckle up. This is just the beginning.

Typical of him to do that. And what of his followers? I'll bet they too are still blaming Biden as well. It's like a broken record and the music was shitty in the first place. And some people say we need to work with these people? How?"It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0 -
will put this here....Since Edward Burtynsky’s birth in Ontario, Canada, in 1955, the Earth’s population has roughly tripled, and its economy has grown tenfold. This “great acceleration,” to use the title of the retrospective newly installed at the International Center of Photography, is the most anomalous stretch in human history, and during the past four decades Burtynsky has been almost certainly its greatest visual chronicler—a poet of scale, making use of ever-better lenses and innovations such as drones to gain an ever more encompassing perspective. Perhaps the only photographer to have backed up farther from this subject was Bill Anders, the Apollo 8 astronaut who gave us “Earthrise,” in 1968. But that image was taken from too far away to even hint at the stress that the Earth was undergoing as the human footprint expanded. “Burtynsky had the perfect depth of field for the task, and his images have become steadily more complicated over time,” Bill McKibben writes.
