The Dismantling of Higher Education in America

First it was liberal teachers. Then it was DEI. DOGE killed funding for research grants across the country, stifling innovation and research. Now its its foreign students (not just Harvard, Marco Rubio is pausing all interviews for foreign students needing visas to review their social media accounts). On top of that, this possible budget bill will gut funding that helps working class families be able to send children to college basically limited college opportunities to well connected and wealthy families.

And while its a cheap laugh to go after Barron or Trump not getting into Harvard (if thats even a thing), I think its a distraction from the bigger reason of why theres been an attack on high education from the right over the past decade which is the more educated you are, the less proclivity you have towards conservatism.

Do you really think they are that sophisticated though? With trump it seems like the stupidest explanation is the correct one. The Atlantic had a really long story about the attack on knowledge yesterday which ties in to this as well. Some of it I kind of get and understand, but a lot of it is just an attack on people who seek knowledge through research and fact as opposed to posited opinions. It's just ridiculous how those who have been screaming about too much government are now OK with the government basically trying to dictate every aspect of both the private and public sectors and those who don't comply in advance become targets of repeated government harassment through threats, lawsuits and/or defunding.Tim Simmons said:And while its a cheap laugh to go after Barron or Trump not getting into Harvard (if thats even a thing), I think its a distraction from the bigger reason of why theres been an attack on high education from the right over the past decade which is the more educated you are, the less proclivity you have towards conservatism.

No reason to doubt it. Not one Ivy League school accepted him? Seems odd, figuring COOTWH is an alumn of UPenn. I mean even Amy Carter got into Brown (not taking anything away from Amy). So Barron goes to NYU to be close to momma? Not taking anything away from NYU either. The level of attacks on the Ivy League is more than antisemitism.Gern Blansten said:

On a more serious note, COOTWH has not a clue of where America’s innovation and economic development really comes from. It’s colleges and universities doing private and publicly funded research that drives a large percentage of the economy when stuff gets to market and industry. We’re ceding the future to China. For a cut to the big guy.

Honestly the danger I am finding in MAGA is that on a lot of the issues, there are legit concerns that need dealt with (I am talking from my perspective as a former republican and likely right leaning centrist now). The issue is the batshit crazy way in which they are dealing with them all....and more specifically the enemy target list Trump appears to have written on his wall (before putting on lipstick....seen Billy Madison?).
Anyhow, I personally believe there are serious issues with higher education. I would like it all addressed. But MAGA has an all or none mentality and it disgusts me. I believe there are a lot of other serious issues (immigration, etc) that need addressed and I can see how MAGA appeals to people who are looking for a sledgehammer instead of a scalpel.hippiemom = goodness0 -
or people who don't full understand the detail or nuances of the issues and see these people are very serious and accomplished and will obviously do whats best with the best of intentionscincybearcat said:and I can see how MAGA appeals to people who are looking for a sledgehammer instead of a scalpel.

maga couldn't cut it in school so they want everyone else to be as stupid as many of them are.
no wonder the maga movement is full of people that are unhappy with their lot in life and are blaming everyone else for their inability to have a better life.
i am a better person because i went to college. i am doing better in life because i chose to get a master's degree.
imagine waking up every day and your first emotion being grievance. to me, that is maga in a nutshell. a bunch of angry people that are too dumb to fix their own lives so they want to make everyone else as miserable as they are."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln
"Well, you tell him that I don't talk to suckas."0 -
maga is clearly anti-education, anti-knowledge, and anti-science.
The dumbing down of the populace is the goal of the conservative right side of the political spectrum.
They know that if people are dumb they can spew any conspiracy theories, dogwhistles, and lies and the base will believe, click, donate, and vote for the politicians that parrot the bullshite.

The science thing has me baffled. If you want to take a few anomaly's and hold them as absolute fact is beyond me. If one person disagrees with a peer reviewed case and want to run with it? I don't get it.Bentleyspop said:maga is clearly anti-education, anti-knowledge, and anti-science.
The dumbing down of the populace is the goal of the conservative right side of the political spectrum.
They know that if people are dumb they can spew any conspiracy theories, dogwhistles, and lies and the base will believe, click, donate, and vote for the politicians that parrot the bullshite.
As for dismantling everything and they are doing it, I do believe its their version of deregulation. The people that are undereducated already are in their pockets so maybe it's not that they want to attack education? I thought they were going after it to destroy the unions.0 -
