From the second you clear immigration they are monitoring you. It is the only place in the world I have visited where heavily armed soldiers stood outside my hotel. That includes Mexico City and South America. It is 100% percent a controlled state.

Did Mao, Stalin or Lenin build many five star hotels? Again, a police state, a military state, a dictatorship, these can all exist outside of pure communism. You don’t need that economic system to have a police state. Mao aspired to proper Marxism but Deng Xiopang (sp?) instituted significant reforms that made China the more mixed economy it is today.

Cannot speak to Russia. Never been there. Sure China will take western investment, but try getting dollars out of China. Not so easy. The political ideals you speak of may have made it a better form of communism and there may be a higher standard of living for some people. But peel the onion a bit and the quality of life there is not very good. Go spend a day in a town outside of a major city and tell me what you see. It is a communist country still very much controlled by the state.

Isnt that the case for any big city? Drive a little ways and you have pockets? Or do you mean there is well off and poor? I saw that a lot in other countries.

Something for China and Russia is the govt does not like money leaving their country. People with money will purchase property in other countries, that is their way of getting money out of the country.

Russia had a Lotto winner buy some townhouse in NYC. He then came over and sold it and had that cash here in a bank account. Pretty smart.

There is some truth to what you say. There are bad parts of most cities. The difference is that is not just pockets. Its regions. South America has similar currency restrictions. I think I have heard about buying boats to do the same as the real estate. Even if they take a 20% loss, they can put cash in an American or EU bank account.

The US economy shrank much faster in the first quarter than previously reported

The US economy contracted in the beginning of the year at a much faster pace than previously reported, as tariff fears took a much greater toll on economic growth.

Gross domestic product, the broadest measure of economic output, registered an annualized rate of -0.5% from January through March, the Commerce Department said Thursday in its third and final estimate. That’s worse than the 0.2% decline reported in the second estimate. GDP is adjusted for seasonal swings and inflation.

So the FED met up and decided not to lower interest rates to the chagrin of the President.
Interesting enough President Trump appointed the Fed chairman Powell and now seems to be at odds with each other.
The President wanted a .250 cut at least but didn't get it.
Two governors actually dissented from the vote to stay put, something that doesn't happen often. Those two were also Trump appointees.
The fed says there is a lowering coming of the interest rates but not just yet.

Waiting in the wings are Bessent and Hassett as possible successors for Powells job. Lets see what happens when it does.

Trump says the housing market is stifled because of interest rates. Lowering rates would make another housing boom.

I'll refrain from my comments and let everyone have at it first.

I think its all horseshit. Lower the rates then the price of homes go up again and then people will buy a second or third home and rent them out then we cry shortages!

Because you don't cut rates when you're still battling inflationary affects. What he wants is it done for his bootlicking simps to provide political results. You don't cut rates when your levying tariffs. We're ran by absolute morons.

Prices of homes are coming down because the supply of homes on the market are higher than the amount of buyers at the moment. Which is crazy to think, but here we are.

So these revised job figures could signal a rate cut in September...trump will likely act like his bullying allowed the cut.

I have argued with so many magats about this....it was a 9-2 vote to keep rates where they are. Magats are so stupid they think it's just Powell making the call.

And PBS is shutting down…which is huge politically because the Dems lost their main way to reach rural America. Forget about screaming from the rooftops about these two blatant attempts to rig elections…we got the Epstein drama to try to change votes.
