I learned on Friday my pressure ulcer will require surgery. Which means a return to inpatient hell, and a recovery period that will limit and set back my physical therapy.

But! Not until May at the earliest.

  • Hey Mike - I'm glad you are recovering and have a GREAT time at the show!!!  Good luck with your request I really hope that you get it!  And don't get me started on healthcare...I was in Medical Sales for 20 years and have been battling cancer for 6 years.  The way we treat our young, old, sick & poor in this country is a complete fucking disgrace.  It's opened my eyes in so many ways and I thought I was pretty aware workiing in "the industry".  Little did I know...

    Thank you!

Today is one month from the show. Last week I had follow-up MRIs on my brain, cervical spine, and thoracic spine. All normal, no lesions. That's good. But puzzling: I still can't walk, and certain reflexes, like sneezing, are just gone. That's right, I haven't sneezed in 15 months.

    Bump. 20 days.

Today I think I should recognize the incredible nurses and therapists who work in the system. Some of nicest and hardest working people I have ever met work in healthcare. And they are not doctors. There are horror shows, lord knows I have some to share, but that's part of what makes the good ones so good: Even with peers trying to drag them and their work down, they still excel. On more than one occasion, I had nurses who were deeply invested in my recovery. Nurses who requested me on their shifts. For that I am forever grateful.

Today I still work with a large number of therapists. Since we're all in an outpatient setting, we can safely discuss hospitals and how terrifying they can be. Each of them has spent time working on the inside, so they understand. Their biggest takeaway, I feel, is attitude makes all the difference. They are positive, uplifting, encouraging. Working through rehabilitation requires determination and commitment. A therapist coldly reciting textbook excerpts would be worthless. As much as I appreciate their skill, it is their bedside manner that is truly exemplary.

There are good ones, bad ones, and those in between. At all levels of care. I can tell the good ones when they ask how I am feeling and why I want to see the doctor before requesting my credit card.  Do not worry about the bill. It will not affect your credit. They have an obligation to treat you.

Wonders never cease with insurance. I recently had an evaluation for a custom fit, ultralight wheelchair, which will be key to regaining independence and transitioning back to walking. The request for this went before my insurer... Everything on the chair has been approved. Except all four of the wheels.

Medical devices can be tough with insurance. Many times they will not spring for top of the line but will pay for average devices (i.e. not that carbon fiber model). Get your doctor to tell the insurance company that the specific device is needed for specific medical reasons and you might have better luck. Best of luck to you!
