Really. And if you're sick how are you expected to advocate for yourself! Take care and will keep you in my thoughts. Tough ride for sure ❤️

Crazy story.  Hard to know what to write...happy you are ok.

Hope you get your wish.  There is never any harm in asking.  I mean this band is what got many people through tough times, or they enjoyed the band with people during good times.  Truly the soundtrack of our lives.  Wish you the best.

I can relate to your anger with health care and insurance.

My wife’s family had a long history of cancer death. Her mother and aunt had passed away from breast cancer. She started getting mammograms almost 20 years before it is recommended and insurance always covered it. So imagine our surprise when she was diagnosed Stage 4.

How could this happen? She’s been getting yearly mammograms for 20 years.

The answer? With her dense breast tissue mammograms never would have picked it up. Ultrasound would. This was never even suggested with the history and wouldn’t even have been covered, not medically necessary.

She fought the good fight for 2.5 years and passed away August 22, 2018 age 47.

    Fucking assholes.

My thoughts are with you in your fight.

    Thank you, and my condolences.

We somehow live with the most advanced healthcare in the world and in history, and yet absent round-the-clock advocacy, fierce demands, more knowledge than the provider, and even telepathy, the system is happy to discard you for profit.

I recently had to take my 16 year old daughter to the emergency room because she had stomach pains near the area of her appendix. We have great insurance. The best money can buy. She did get great care. The bill after insurance? $11,000. Stay well and tell the insurance company and hospitals to fuck off.

That is ri-god-damn-diculous. Reminds me of the 2x we had to take our son to the ER in the middle of the night for breathing issues when he was a toddler. Great insurance but the pediatric doctor on duty was “out of network”. Got a $600 dollar bill in the mail like 6 months later both times. Fucking stupid.

Same, middle of the night and she was in pain. Needed a doctor and 10 different scans. No urgent care centers open. I will not pay it. Funny thing is that at the end of the day, the doctor said she had bad gas. Too many flamin hot cheetos and mac n cheese. There is a reason my family gets routine healthcare in Japan. They never pay a cent.

Sorry Mike for the detour. Play Footsteps you pussies!

No apologies necessary. These accounts are important.

I'm reminded of an insurance denial I overheard about at one of the therapy clinics I frequent. There they help patients advocate for themselves, and work closely with a wheelchair vendor. The denial was for a powered chair that could reposition the occupant to prevent pressure ulcers. "Not medically necessary." The patient? Suffering from MS and a complete (read: severed) spinal cord injury.

I learned on Friday my pressure ulcer will require surgery. Which means a return to inpatient hell, and a recovery period that will limit and set back my physical therapy.

But! Not until May at the earliest.

  • Hey Mike - I'm glad you are recovering and have a GREAT time at the show!!!  Good luck with your request I really hope that you get it!  And don't get me started on healthcare...I was in Medical Sales for 20 years and have been battling cancer for 6 years.  The way we treat our young, old, sick & poor in this country is a complete fucking disgrace.  It's opened my eyes in so many ways and I thought I was pretty aware workiing in "the industry".  Little did I know...

    Thank you!

Today is one month from the show. Last week I had follow-up MRIs on my brain, cervical spine, and thoracic spine. All normal, no lesions. That's good. But puzzling: I still can't walk, and certain reflexes, like sneezing, are just gone. That's right, I haven't sneezed in 15 months.

    Bump. 20 days.

Today I think I should recognize the incredible nurses and therapists who work in the system. Some of nicest and hardest working people I have ever met work in healthcare. And they are not doctors. There are horror shows, lord knows I have some to share, but that's part of what makes the good ones so good: Even with peers trying to drag them and their work down, they still excel. On more than one occasion, I had nurses who were deeply invested in my recovery. Nurses who requested me on their shifts. For that I am forever grateful.

Today I still work with a large number of therapists. Since we're all in an outpatient setting, we can safely discuss hospitals and how terrifying they can be. Each of them has spent time working on the inside, so they understand. Their biggest takeaway, I feel, is attitude makes all the difference. They are positive, uplifting, encouraging. Working through rehabilitation requires determination and commitment. A therapist coldly reciting textbook excerpts would be worthless. As much as I appreciate their skill, it is their bedside manner that is truly exemplary.

There are good ones, bad ones, and those in between. At all levels of care. I can tell the good ones when they ask how I am feeling and why I want to see the doctor before requesting my credit card.  Do not worry about the bill. It will not affect your credit. They have an obligation to treat you.

Wonders never cease with insurance. I recently had an evaluation for a custom fit, ultralight wheelchair, which will be key to regaining independence and transitioning back to walking. The request for this went before my insurer... Everything on the chair has been approved. Except all four of the wheels.

Medical devices can be tough with insurance. Many times they will not spring for top of the line but will pay for average devices (i.e. not that carbon fiber model). Get your doctor to tell the insurance company that the specific device is needed for specific medical reasons and you might have better luck. Best of luck to you!
