It said it on promo stuff for a while. I spoke to my buddy who said it was amazing. he said the only real disappointment was MJK cutting night 2 short.

Pulled this from Reddit, (& matches my recollection of the announcement). Should people have inferred “no repeats”? Not really, but the unique designation was definitely there at first.

They announced “unique” sets.  Not “no repeats” set, like Metallica has been doing for the last couple of years. Big difference

Pearl Jam has played unique set lists every show of there career. Doesn’t mean there aren’t some repeats every night.

that being said. Shitty that they cut night 2 short. Hopefully there were some fans that had a good time

Maynard's comment (which I think was more a jab at the promoters than the fans) about the set being a unique experience two songs into the show was at least poorly timed / executed... if that comment wasn't made right before playing 3 repeats, I'm not sure this blows up half as much as it does, but that's Maynard for you.

From people I know who were down there, it seems like it was a healthy mix of some who were annoyed and some who didn't care / still had a blast.
  • The no repeat songs for Metallica was definitely a different thing than Tool in the sand. No repeats for Metallica was a marketing thing to get people to buy tickets for both nights as Metallica was playing huge stadiums. Tool should have used common sense and not played any repeats because there was no turnover in the crowd from night 1 to night 2.

I wonder where the line is. If they play Vicarious three times night one but only two times night two is that cool?

I totally agree with you that a "no repeat weekend" would have been incredible.  If that what was promised, I probably would have splurged.  Tool DID NOT promise no repeats.  The only sin here that i can see is cutting night two short.

Narrative is changing.  Common sense?  They were on course to change 30-40 percent of the set from the first night. that's two unique sets (as promissed).

If No repeats was the deal breaker for forking out the cash?  Make all the calls to promotors and hosts to confirm that that is the case. don't just hope for common sense.

    True!  Maynard loves irony!

He probably wasn't expecting that comment to ignite a shit storm.
  • Common sense in the fact that they had to know that repeating half the setlist from the first night was going to piss off a lot of the crowd there. I would have still had a good time.

Me too!  And if you follow Tool,  changing half the set on night 2 is big!

I’m starting to think that half of complainers aren’t Tool fans.

just people that can afford the trip and looking for something to bitch about.

I still don’t see any wrong doings,  besides the shortened second night

Makes me glad that PJ plays two hours at Ohana not this 1-1.5 hr headline show at a destination getaway place.

My wife said I'm not allowed to hang creepy posters so I'm buggered where im going to put this one!  Interesting despite the macabre but Mexicans love the skull motifs (hence dia de los Muertos) and it is appealing enough to snag for mine. Looking forward to tomorrow-they kicked arse in Monterrey so glad they were still in the mood to bring it.

    That is horrifying.

QOTSA are guilty of this too. Out of the 6 times I've seen them here, 5 of them have posters, 3 of them are skulls, and two of those even have topless females (one of which is getting her slit throat sewn up by the skull guy) which is bizarre and makes them un-displayable. I didn't even bother buying them.

Epic gig in Mexico City. Great crowd for the most part and Maynard really brought it. He was in fine form. Just a couple of wee fuckups but they were back in step very quickly. The crowd fed off the energy Maynard had and it really made a difference. Brilliant night.
