They're just different. I love Pearl Jam as much as anyone, but there's no denying that "Larger than Life" and "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" are great pop songs.Shaindli1 said:As my friend just texted: PJ = good 90s

Some people just need to make art into sports and I'll never understand why. Like what you like but the whole "the music YOU like sucks" thing is...well I don't know what it is but it's not for me.BF25394 said:

One of the coolest things about growing up in the 90s was how diverse the popular music was...you'd have a sequence on MTV where it was like Alice In Chains -> PM Dawn -> Kris Kross -> Garth Brooks -> Color Me Badd. It was fucking WILD. And while the boy band pop thing never resonated with me, the Backstreet Boys brought joy to millions of fans over the years and there's something beautiful about people connecting to music - even if it's not the same music that elicits that reaction from me.1996 Charlotte

Growing up in the 90s, I definitely had that gatekeeper of quality music aditude, but at this point I've realized to each their own. Who am I to crap on something that makes someone else happy. I mean with everything that is going on in the world, if you have something that makes you happy then that is all good with me.PrezIntense said:

I loved UB40, Duran Duran and Howard Jones in the 90s. I do not trash other bands that people like. But, I do not get the love for Metallica.0

yeah.. for me in 1996-1997 I wasn’t listening to no code. I am a big pearl jam/Jeff Ament fan and they have been on heavy rotation for many years .
However, the nostalgic memories of BSB are pretty awesome tooPost edited by ally12 on2005: Ottawa / 2011: Ottawa / 2016: Ottawa / 2022: Ottawa / 2022:Quebec City / 2024: Vancouver / 2024: Vancouver / 2024: New York City0 -

Glass houses, y'allAlso the sphere has booked U2, Grateful Dead and the Eagles. Not exactly modern bands.Younger and mid career bands need to build their audience and loyalty among their fan base. Expecting fans to drop a grand on travel plus blow some of the precious free vacation days we get in the states is no way to do that.If this were the 90s there would be staunch opposition to PJ doing an exclusive Vegas residency at the expense of tour dates. The sphere has a very small target market ( and enormous overhead as well.).0 -
I agree with all of this. It is very odd how much hate people can have for entertainers just for attempting to entertain us. There are songs I don't like, and there are artists whose music I generally don't like, but I try to reserve my hatred for people who are bad actors or otherwise antisocial (e.g., Kanye West). I never got the Nirvana fans who hated Pearl Jam, or the Pearl Jam fans who hated Stone Temple Pilots, etc. And even when there's an artist whose music I tend not to like, I'm always open-minded and willing to embrace a good song if they produce one. (I wish I could think of an example right now.)PrezIntense said:

And I have the same observation about pop music in the '80s. If you listened to top 40 radio in the '80s, you might hear Michael Jackson followed by Bon Jovi followed by Eddie Rabbitt followed by Atlantic Starr followed by Poison followed by Prince followed by Pretty Poison. (I'm being a little anachronistic there because Eddie Rabbitt was an early '80s star.) Today, top 40 radio is almost completely devoid of "classic" rock and non-hip hop R&B (although country has enjoyed a pop-radio resurgence, but the country that gets played on pop radio is all hip-hop influenced). Non-hip hop R&B has almost gone extinct from the mainstream. I really miss it.I gather speed from you fucking with me.0 -
Duran Duran was great in the '80s, great in the '90s, and still puts out great albums today. Long live Duran Duran!Get_Right said:I loved UB40, Duran Duran and Howard Jones in the 90s. When I was little in the 80s I wanted to marry Simon LeBon. Years later I got to meet him as an adult and told him that. We had a laugh.BF25394 said:

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with this girl who saw Eddie Vedder and Simon Le Bon chatting at 31 Flavors last night, so it stands to reason that Duran Duran and Pearl Jam are planning a tour as co-headliners.on2legs said:Has anyone seen the tour rumors thread?
