"Everything going for you"? Democrats had an unpopular incumbent president whose term was marked by the steepest inflation in 40 years, and the person who ended up with their nomination was an untested, largely unknown figure. They also had to deal with discontent over a foreign war that a segment of their base was willing to cut off its nose to spite its face over (i.e., vote third party or not vote at all to protest Democratic support of Israel, and thereby help elect an ardently pro-Israel Republican who's anti-Muslim to boot). And I wouldn't be so sure that having a black female candidate was a tailwind. Your own "DEI hire" comment reflects a strain of what I'll charitably call "backlash" that means that the candidate's demographics may have actually been a headwind.

And please stop with the fake outrage about Biden supposedly calling Trump's supporters "garbage." Trump constantly denigrates entire swaths of America, including whole cities and states. He called fallen veterans "suckers" and "losers." He called the country the world's garbage can. His entire campaign is based on the premise that America is not great. Stack up all the disparaging things he's said about various groups and places and it's hard to come any conclusion other than that Donald Trump hates America.

I do. I also consider myself fortunate that I don't belong to any of the groups in America whose lives are going to be made harder if Trump does what he says he will do. I have seen my net worth soar today as a direct result of Trump's election. But I don't make political judgments  based on what is good for me. I make political judgments based on what will be good for the country.

I'm in the same boat as a white man.  The very essence of "white privilege" in that these issues don't exist for a majority of the nation, so they deem it ok to not vote, or simply say "we will be ok" with either candidate.  I was in that same bubble in my 20s, young and ignorant, until I matured and realized how the system is set up.  Along with meeting many beautiful people of other races and religion, who I love and consider family.  Including my wife.

I never said anything about Trump other than calling an entire group of people that don’t agree with you racist or stupid or clowns is a bad look and a bad take. I am surrounded by tons of people in my life that are on both sides of the coin that are awesome, intelligent, caring people. BOTH SIDES. I don’t agree with them all on many things but that doesn’t make them “clowns”. It’s ok to discuss and disagree and still be friends and respect each other.

Be careful about making sweeping pronouncements about America based on a candidate or a party getting a bare majority-- and possibly, once all the votes are counted, only a plurality-- of the votes cast. Trump winning with 51 percent (at the moment) or 49.6 percent (where it could end up) or something in between doesn't reflect anything much different about America than when Obama won 53 percent of the vote in 2008. In both cases, the country was closely divided, and it elected two very different leaders because we have an essentially two-party, winner-take-all system. The ultimate result was not so much about "America" as it was about which candidate better appealed to a narrow swath of unaligned voters in the middle of the electorate. These numbers are an oversimplification, but if 40 percent of the electorate favors Democrats and 40 percent of the electorate favors Republicans, you get 55 percent of the 20 percent that are truly unaligned, and you'll win 51-49 in a two-party race. Parties will claim mandates in these situations-- Trump did last night-- but they tempt fate if they don't recognize how precarious their support is. Trump called it an "unprecedented" mandate and, while it may be unprecedented for him-- it will likely be the first time he has won a plurality of the vote-- it's a very weak mandate by historical standards. If this is an unprecedented mandate, what was Obama's mandate? Or Reagan's? Or Nixon's in '72? Or LBJ's in '64?

Having said all that, is it troubling that somewhere between 49 and 51 percent of voters were willing to vote for a person like Trump? Yes, it is. The unwillingness of people to hold people accountable for bad behavior because they are on your "team" is one of the more repugnant features of modern American life, and the lack of accountability will only breed more bad behavior. This goes a lot deeper than politics and, in some ways, the phenomenon in the larger culture paved the way for it to reach the level it has in politics. Think of sports fans who cheer for a guy on their team who is accused of a violent crime or the use of PEDs but who vilify a guy on a rival team who is accused of the same types of things. Remember, a lot of Trump's appeal for a good chunk of his voters is less about his positive qualities and more about the fact that he hates the right people and makes the people who support the other "team" angry.

You are spot on with this 100%.  I've witnessed this very concept across the board with MAGA.  It's somehow engrained in their mentality.  Another pattern you might notice, and they try to hide, is their self-hatred.  Anyone who feels the need to lash out, and put others down, is for sure at war with themselves.  That is the MAGA way.

That is almost impossible to do, and bear in mind that Trump will be 82 and even more diminished by the time 2028 rolls around so it's not clear that he'd be a viable candidate then. But hey, Zimbabwe kept "re-electing" Mugabe until he was about 150 years old...
