am I wrong or isn't it, "oh to not begin with anything"

I could be wrong--maybe you have the lyrics. I love Singles just for the small part of Eddie Vedder in the movie. A young Matt Dillan isn't bad either....
Baby, You Wouldn't Last a Minute on The Creek......

Together we will float like angels.........

In the moment that you left the room, the album started skipping, goodbye to beauty shared with the ones that you love.........

I think it's about a kid not knowing what to do with his life and the parent telling him to do something about it. They get in a fight first then the kid goes to leave but takes a BREATHE settles down and they start to talk. The parent tells him to look inside yourself and find what you want to do and go out into the world and make it happen.

That's what I think ..probably way off but oh well

I think it's a father telling his son to go out and experience life;all of it--the bad, good whatever. He begins by telling of how we begin....we come into the world "Oh to not begin with anything. Hand, a light, a warm breathe, and a scream..." childbirth.simple. then he goes on to say that when you "tamper if you like between the door......" and then after more thought the father says.."can't expect to go out, go out with anything anything more..." as if to say that you are born and if you don't go out and be an active part of life; really get out in it, you can't expect to "go out with anything, anything more'. In other words when you die, you die with more or you die with nothing more than the experience of being born. I think it is a father encouraging his son to get out and live life "see the world; see it all".
I also love the part where he refers to himself and talks about the hands "grabbing things and me.." It's like the Hero Worship thing that I refer to in my poem about him. And then the part "if I knew where it was I'd take you there, there's much more than this!!"
Like he is saying that he blew it, got old and never found the things we look for when we're young and he has hopes that his son can find the things for himself...I know way deep..but it's raining in Chicago today.
It's amazing that Eddie Vedder can see the feelings people feel before he even gets to that point. He wrote that far before he became a father. Oh and that is also what makes good poetry........insight.

That's the best explanation of Breath I've ever read!!

  • Saw it at Borgata 2... unbelievable.

One of my favorite songs of all time. I get the chills every time I hear the bridge....

The song helped me work through some very difficult times. During those "times", I'd listen to some PJ on as I'd lay in bed and every time after listening to Breath, I always felt like there was hope. The bridge gets me every time.
  • There are so many of Ed's song lyrics that helped me through some hard times. I was going threw a divorce in the early 90's when I heard for the first time the song Black. I listened to it over and over and I was hooked on Pearl Jam ever since. Indifference was another one that said it for me, and Rearview Mirror. I remember writting out the lyrics to that one and sending them to my soon to be ex-husband. It was so our story. He was pretty P O'd when he got the letter. Thanks Ed.

Yeah that line got to him but the part about beating me was what really got him. Especially since I mailed the letter to his house so his girlfriend got to read it. I am a bad bad girl. LOL

  • It is amazing that two legendary song came off one soundtrack. Personally, I dont feel that many soundtrack songs are all that good, but I guess singles is the exception.
Oh he fills it up with the love of a girl...
  • I just read every post in this thread and I love how this song means so much to so many. I too have yet to see it live but have faith that one day I will. How about Hawaii???
In 95 I was going to University taking classes I had no interest in. I was toying with the idea of leaving my home town and getting out of my rut. I was listening to the Singles soundtrack walking home from class and on comes Breath. I can picture exactly where I was when I had my "There's much more than this" moment. At that point I made the decision to follow my heart and leave. It was the hardest decision I had ever made but it turned out to be the best one. 11 Years later I'm loving life and still loving that song that kicked me in the ass and helped me see the way.

    Thanks Pearl Jam

  • Just listening to the demo version of this right now... Kick ass, baby...

This is seriously one of my favourite songs ever, the band is on fire... The lyrics just HIT you like the proverbial fist to the jaw...

    Beautiful...

I only discovered Breath this year, as in finally get what it means and I found it so very inspirational. I keep listening to it right now to remind me to follow my dreams, and not to be scared to do that, and to enjoy life in the process.

I was very happy to hear it live in Pistoia, along with SOLAT, one of my all-time favourites.

So, yeah, Breath is awesome! :)

oh reach the door, a breath and a...
oh reach the door...and a la la la la yeah

    life ain't what it's worth
a breath and a...oh reach the door

all these reaching hands out grabbing things...grabbing me
    day in day out accumulating
whoa, i suggest you step out on your porch
run away my son...see it all...oh see the world
oh reach the door...a breath and a...
