one of the most INSPIRATIONAL songs EVER!!

I love especially the MSG I verison if it, it totally makes you want to get up and dance and you can feel the energy in the crowd when this song is being played.

OMG PEOPLE I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH. If you had to get a pearl jam song an say its a perfect song and shows and says who they are you would choose breath. MSG1 version is awesome, i love the smile he does at the beginning too.

I highly agree w/you my friend. This is truly one of the their best!! This song, along w/I Got Shit, and Not For You, are truly my theme songs at the moment. Breath is like a breath of fresh air.

But in all seriousness, if people take time to look at the lyrics, they will see that is a song about hope, confidence, and inspiration!!

And MSG I, holy crap!! I almost died when they played that song. AFTER Crown of Thorns, I thought I was a goner.

And you can tell that everyone in the band was happy when they were playing it. A friend of mine told me that the song was not originally on the setlist, it was Stone's idea to put that song in the playlist at the last minute.

i also love the version in state college pensylvania 03 where ed forgets the lyrics, he goes,
"all these reaching hands out grabbing things...grabbing me,
"day in day out accumulating",

then he completely forgets what the next line is so you dont hear him at all, but you can hear the crowd helping him by screaming

"whoa, i suggest you step out on your porch"

an ed then talks to the crowd "yeah yeah on the porch"
and then remembers and continues with the song after that

I think it's about a kid not knowing what to do with his life and the parent telling him to do something about it. They get in a fight first then the kid goes to leave but takes a BREATHE settles down and they start to talk. The parent tells him to look inside yourself and find what you want to do and go out into the world and make it happen.

That's what I think ..probably way off but oh well

Besides the thing about being a child and not knowing what to do, I think it could also be about dreams, and wanting something so bad and doing everything you can for them, but in the end nothing really matters in life as long as you enjoy it.

i thought this song was about success

like once you're "famous" eveyone wants a piece of you
and you don't have any time for yourself to catch your breath

also he's thinking back to his childhood and when he tried to decide what to do with his life and that there was more than the home town life

Breath was my first favorite Pearl Jam song, years before I ever joined the Ten Club or even considered myself a dedicated fan. That opening guitar gets me every time. Whenever they play it on the radio I've got my stereo cranked before the song really starts. It still is a huge favorite in my book but since Yield came out it's had some stiff competition with In Hiding and GTF

I was estatic when I got to hear it live in Lexington KY in 03 but for some reason it didn't have quite the punch that the studio version had
