the problem I have with some of these assholes "coming around" is that do they really give a shit about "democracy" or do they just really, really hate what Trump has done to their party and they want things to go back to "normal"?

I'm loath to defend Trump, but I don't think this answer is nonsensical, exactly. It's digressive, it's unspecific, and it fundamentally misunderstands economics, but there is a logic to it. He is saying that his tariffs (what he calls "taxes on foreign nations") will generate so much money that we'll be able to spend it on new programs, including expanded access to child care. There are problems with this answer, including that this is not how tariffs work-- they are paid by U.S. consumers, not foreign nations-- and the answer completely dodges the part of the question asking what specific things Trump would support.

Now, with respect to the frequent times when Trump really does utter word salads that don't track, as someone said, "good luck with that" getting people to focus on it. Trump "not making sense" is the norm, and thus the bar is lowered. When Biden struggled at the debate, it stood out because Biden generally makes sense. He's not the smoothest public speaker and never has been, and he may mix up a name or word at times, but he doesn't usually say things like "we finally beat Medicare" after losing his train of thought in the middle of a rambling answer. It alarmed people because it deviated so much from the norm. Trump is out there every day rambling like a mental patient, so people are inured to it when he goes off on a tangent about sharks or Hannibal Lecter or ancient aliens or whatever.

The more likely explanation is he hardly even understood the question so he pivoted to the only thing he really cares about....tariffs. 

I would for Kamala to bring up Hannibal Lector of the shark thing, almost in a joking matter, and ask him to explain what the hell he means.
