Favorite Opener You've heard live.

Its been kinda weird for me. I have seen them 5 times (North and South Carolina, unfortunately missed the Columbia show because we were traveling from New Braunfels,TX to do 2 shows in Nantucket,MA) but I have only heard Sometimes and Oceans as openers.

So my favorite is Oceans (had Sometimes 4 times)

What's yours?

My favourite opener was Life Wasted in Vienna 2006, a great way to kickstart a show. Also loved Sometimes in Munich last year...

A classic PJ opener is definitely Release, but hearing them open with Hard To Imagine in Mansfield was something special.

    1. Can't Keep- was hoping for Hard To Imagine but this one set the tone for a special night
    2. Severed Hand- The first PJ song I ever heard live and the one I was hoping for (its my favorite on the self titled album which they were touring for)
    3. Low Light- also great but can't keep up with the first two. Nice way to start a short acoustic set.

Surprisingly, as it's far from one of my favourite PJ songs, "Inside Job" opening up the 2006 Euro tour in Dublin, was nothing short of spine-tingling.I've heard plenty of versions but I haven't heard a single one that even comes close to touching this.

It's tied with "Long Road" in London last year. Had been dying to hear it as an opener since '96, and finally got it 11 years later - & what a version!!! Wow...

I love hearing them open with Release and I've seen them open with it 3 times. I loved them opening with Why Go at Lolla and Hard to Imagine at MSG, but what I really want to see is...

    WASH!!!

Other than that, I would like to see Oceans, Sometimes & Long Road.

I saw DTE at the same show you did (Champaign '03?) and that was a great kick in the ass. The acoustic Long Road from Mansfield 3 in '03 is my favorite slow opener. Still can't believe there were so few people there to hear it.

By the way, my dream opener is In Hiding.
*Does not include encore of Garden and Leash.

i swear i have seen every opener with the exception of Sometimes.

For me personally Alive in Newcastle was a pretty cool opener because it was so unexpected, also Of the Girl at Benaroya and Miracles at the Gorge, how rare is it that they open with a cover?? and it juts set the tone for an amazing show

For shows i wasnt at All or None at the Vic is an amazing opener and the acoustic verson of Long Road at Mansfield 3 is awesome.

The order for mine would have to go

    1) Betterman - Winnipeg '05 (it was an amazing version and the crowd was LOUD)
    2) Hard To Imagine - Bonnaroo
    3) Interstellar Overdrive/Courduroy - St. Paul '06 #2
    4) Last Exit - St. Paul '06 #1

shit, that was a tough list to choose.

1.) Can't Keep (Hartford 08) - predicted it, wanted it, LOVED it! always wanted to see this one .. such an atmospheric way to open a show..

2.) Hard To Imagine (MSG 08) - Beautiful/emotional way to open. I would think that this would be better then can't keep but i think it had to do with personally how i was feeling. don't get me wrong i was PSYCHED for msg .. but AFTER msg i was a WILDMAN come hartford. but this was absolutely amazing. verrrrry close second.

3.) Wash (Mansfield 2 08) - AMAZING. best wash performance since the early 90s i think. very special ..totally into it. these first 3 are all very close. each 3 are like wet dream openers.

4.) Severed Hand (Hartford 06) - What a way to open my first show. started out rockin hard. however, i do prefer a slower more atmospheric or emotional song to open. either way, this was AWESOME. those opening chords pump you up so much .. PLUS this was when they had those awesome green lasers. i remember thinking, "holy shit i'm in for the experience of a lifetime". and it was. first pj show, changed my life. i rank the other 3 above this show, but it was still incredible.

I neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed to see release. that would be the ultimate for me.

I've only seen them open with MFC, Small Town & Porch (Adelaide '98, Adelaide I & II '06).

Porch is the clear winner of the three...I wasn't very into MFC or Small Town as openers. They don't have the right feel for a show opener...you need something either majestic and slow-burning (like Release or Long Road) or something to kick you in the gut right off the bat (Go, anyone?).

I had Go in Vegas 2003 and it was awesome.

    I rank em like this:

    1. Release X3 (SF 2000, LA 1 2006, MSG 2 2008)
    2. Go (My favorite song but as an opener its not as good as Release)
    3. Oceans (SB 2006)

And that is no disrespect to Oceans but it was just soooooo expected at SB. They could have played it later in the set to really surprise the crowd.

All great openers and more important great songs!
