1.) Long Road (Va. Beach 2000) - This version truly had an emotional impact since it was the first song played after Roskilde.
2.) Present Tense - Just an incredible way to open the show with Mike and Ed. It would be untouchable, but Ed fucked up the outro on guitar at Borgata 2.
3.) Release - The excitement in the crowd. The singalong. Ed's emotions. Such a beautiful opener.
4.) Long Road (Va. Beach 2008) - Not as emotional as in 2000, but after 8 years of not playing in this city, it was still pretty special.
5.) Can't Keep - I really didn't want to see this one at the time, but it still remains one of my favorites. I agree with the atmospheric comment above.
6.) Hard to Imagine - A real treat for the 10C fans since it's a b-side and most normal fans don't know it.
7.) Love Boat Captain - I love this song, but I've never been a huge fan of it opening shows. It proved me wrong at Reading when all the fans were eating it up and singing louder than Ed expected.
8.) Long Road (Borgata 1, 2005) - Eh. It works better outdoors. Maybe I was just spoiled by the emotional Va. Beach performance and this was my first repeat.
9.) Wasted Reprise - Does this even count? I've never been big on the band using a new song to open shows.

The opener I want to see most:
    Sometimes

I agree that Wasted Reprise is a bad opener, but Can't Keep and Love Boat Captain were both good new song openers in the 2003 tour, IMO, of course.

I've been to four shows and heard four different openers, so I consider myself very lucky. They were Sometimes in Quebec 2005 and Can't Keep, Hard to Imagine and Wash at Hartford and the two Mansfield of this tour. As far as my favorite opener....I'm gonna have to go with Can't Keep. I wasn't expecting that at all and Hartford was a RIDICULOUS show.

Release - Montreal 05' ..."oh dear John can you see this now"

Watching it live I picked up on eddie changing the lyrics to John and stumbling over the words with emotion....a few songs later when he mentioned it was the anniversary of Johhny Ramone's death it registered.

It was amazing and doubtful that opener will be topped for me as Eddie sang it with such emotion that night.

    1. Wash - Philly '05
    2. Last Exit - Kissimmee '04
    3. Can't Keep - Columbia '08
    4. Wasted Reprise -> Life Wasted - Camden I '06
    5. Love Boat Captain - Atlanta '03

edit: weirdly, that's pretty much the same order as my fav show order. maybe switch columbia and kissimmee, but i dunno, every show was just too awesome so it doesn't matter.

I'd have to go with Wash...been fortunate enough to see it a couple of times and for some reason it really sets the show up emotionally...I feel like release does the same so I'd have to make that my #2

I've only been to 3 shows and have gotten Sometimes twice (Charlotte 2000 and Charlotte 2003) and Can't Keep (Columbia 2008). Of those, Can't Keep was my favorite.

i just did the same thing. 14 shows, 11 different openers.

    release x 3
    of the girl x 2
    corduroy
    why go
    can't keep
    wash
    hard to imagine
    betterman
    present tense
    severed hand
    love boat captain

to me, the quintessential opener to a pj show is release. my favorite -- kc in 2003 in the rain and when the lightning flashed, ed said "hi, dad".

present tense in stl 2003 was amazing. best version i've ever heard. boot sounds unreal. why go at lolla was a fun way to get a huge crowd going. can't keep at hartford started an amazing show.

least favorite -- betterman in san diego. just seemed odd.

need to see -- oceans and long road. was hoping for oceans last tour, but got 4 different openers in 4 shows (wash and hard to imagine!), so no complaints here.

They open with Release almost every time they come to Chicago. That has to be my favorite.
Although if they ever opened with Sometimes or Hard To Imagine, I'd probably faint.
