Setlist Order

Anyone else a little disappointed that 5-8 on the setlist both nights were the first 4 songs from Dark Matter?  I love those songs and certainly want to hear them live but don't like the predictability of the same songs in the same spot in the setlist every night.  One of the great things about the live shows is not knowing what's next and this takes a little bit of that away.  Really hope they start sprinkling the DM songs throughout the setlist in future shows instead of playing them all together.

Could it be because of the screens?

Rigidness of other acts are often attributed/blamed on the graphic on the video screens (KISS, Guns N Roses etc)

I wouldn’t put much stock in that, they’re only 2 shows in.

No, it's four songs and they are experimenting with production. They have spoiled us for years and we are spoiled.

A good way to not know what's next is to avoid reading setlists. It's hard to do, but it's doable.

The only thing I am disappointed in, is the tease of the whole album front to back....2 nights in a row. Go ahead and do the whole thing.

Nope. I don't have a shot until Wrigley and I hope they keep all the Dark Matter in that regard. I've been lucky to see a ton of shows but in 09, 13 (except for a jaunt to LA), and 3 in 22/23 and while all of them were album tours none of them were heavy on the content. I haven't had a proper album tour show in forever. I want to hear these songs and if it's the same order every night, fine by me. The songs around Dark Matter are varied and will continue to be every single night. I look at it as this is my chance to see songs that will disappear (for the most part) so catch em while you can.

I kinda agree with the op but it's not like it would impact my plans. Best case scenario would be breaking up the album over both nights of a 2 night run but obviously not my call. The last 20ish years have conditioned us to setlist watch so all this is just the natural order I think.

Admittedly I might be singing a different tune if it was 5-8 vs 1-4 so maybe different strokes and whatnot

It has been two shows. They've never played any of these songs before. How are people complaining that they were played twice?

Keep playing 'em, in whatever order you like, Pearl Jam. The album has been out for two weeks. I'm not capable of being tired of hearing the songs in any order you choose after two weeks.

They repeated what 9 songs across two nights, and 7 of them were from the new album?  Come on people 4 songs in a row that are brand new is not going to hurt unless you are planning on going to 40 consecutive shows this year, in which case count your blessings that you can make that happen in your life.  I don't care if they play the Dark Matter songs in the exact same order in the exact same spots every night as long as they play them.  It has been kind of disappointing to see how much ground they have ceded in recent years where as in say 2006 they would routinely drop 7-9 songs from the self titled record.  Which is great whether you only have the chance to go to one show or 20, because, it is new music.

I don’t have a problem with it broadly since I do want to hear as much of the new album as possible.

I do get the gripe when it happens twice in back to back nights in the same city. That is a bit disappointing and not the band’s historical MO.

If it is in any way related to the screens/visuals…I can definitely understand people being disappointed. For years and years PJ was basically the exact opposite of that type of performance and it is a big reason why they have such a massive touring fanbase.

It is completely related to the new visuals, imo.  This is a new era of Pearl Jam, arguably the first in 15+ years.  I would actually be surprised if we DIDNT see the same run, in the same order, of the same songs for the Dark Matter album every single night of this tour.  That happening two nights in a row is not a coincidence, it is 100% planned.  This is the Dark Matter tour, after all.

I'm going to six shows this year and the Vancouver shows did nothing to make me regret that decision.  I love the new album and look forward to hearing the songs multiple times.

They could repeat React / Respond twice in the SAME show and I would be oh so happy.  Need that song.  More please.

The nice thing about seeing the first two shows is that “the waiting won’t drive you mad” and, with night one anyway, the setlist was a complete surprise but yeah the similarities between the two nights took last night down a notch for me. Unfortunately, my Dark Matter tour is over so it’s now bittersweet.

i guess Evolution will also be a guarantee each night (as opposed to being “likely”) wth the screens behind them.

The way they're playing, you'd almost think they have an album to promote.

Not an especially valid retort because we are primarily talking about repeats on a 2 night run, of which Vancouver stands above any other multi night run on the LB/BS tours.

We also live in a world where tickets and travel cost more than ever before. It’s valid for people to ask themselves if they really want to shell out the money for a 2 night run w more repeats than previously and 1/3 of the show being the new album due to the shorter sets.

when the 1/3 of the show and repeat are overlapping elements, the answer is yes.  I have no interest in spending money on traveling to shows to hear songs I have heard a couple of dozen times in person and that they have played 300, 400, 500, 600 or 800 times.  They are only going to have about 40 shots at playing these songs before they likely take a back seat in 2025 and beyond. Frankly, if anything, if I only went to Vancouver and did not get to hear Waiting for Stevie get a rip, that would be the only disappointment.

Hopefully they keep playing 8-9 Dark Matter songs a night, and those disappointed start tossing their tickets into the fan to fan pool.

I have my concern as well.  I was willing to buy tickets to multiple shows given the known quality and diversity of the Live Pearl Jam concert experience.  This will be my wife's first Pearl Jam experience as well, and I had previously thought that we would only get 2-3 repeats, and that she would get to experience about 47 live Pearl Jam songs.  It's a minor concern, however, as the Dark Matter album is phenomenal, and seeing these songs performed twice is still a treat.

I appreciate both sides of the argument but I’m kinda on this one. Two nights in Vancouver was not THAT expensive but enough for me to say that’s it. I wish I could go down to Portland this weekend or Seattle at the end of the month but it’s just not happening. I always want to witness as many different songs as possible but, unfortunately, I’m done for 2024.

My problem (and I’ll stress that it’s MY problem) is that the band had made me a bit of a “song hunter.” Was hoping to catch a few different songs last night but it didn’t happen. Again, that’s not the band’s issue, it’s mine.

If you are traveling to multiple shows in order to catch the next Mansfield 03, Grand Rapids 06, or Moline 14 - then stay home and save your money.  It’s not happening

That Pearl Jam was left in the pre-Covid era.  This is a totally new band with a new mindset and a new album.  I have 7 shows planned this year and can’t wait to hear Scared of Fear in the 5 spot 7 times lol.

As someone who loves Dark Matter and only plans on going to one show on the tour, I was relieved to see that they played the majority of the album both shows so far. People complaining about shelling out so much money on multiple shows, that's their prerogative, but also their choice. Just like it's the band's choice to play whatever they want. They're obviously very proud of this album, and they should be.

The reality is that the majority of people at each of these shows are only going to one show and Pearl Jam wants to play the new stuff. It's not like they didn't almost completely change the song selections for the rest of the setlist outside of Dark Matter songs. I would think that should be appeasing enough to all but a small fraction of the fan base.

There are an awful lot of songs I love from Binaural, RA, S/T, Backspacer, LB & Giga I’ve never seen, and at this point likely never will. And I like DM better than every album on that list except Riot Act. So if I get a bunch of those songs twice over my 2 shows, that’s amazing. Because whichever ones I don’t get are probably gone for good after this tour like all but a handful from those previous 6 albums.

We got a lot (and I mean a lot) of 2000-2013 album run on the tours of 2016-2023.  I went to 7 shows in that timeframe and damn near got all of Lightning Bolt and Avacado.

I expect the shows will start to have more variance as they spend more time on the road.  But as someone else posted, this is a 24-25 set list band now, and you know at least 6 are going to be from the new album (which I think is a good number) and at least 6 are going to be from Ten and Vs.

Last night I got In Hiding, which was one of my white whales, and I also got to hear Nothingman, which is one of my all time favorites.  So this fan came away pretty happy with what I spent my money on.
