Dad of two grown daughters here. I felt it. One of the highlights of the album for me.My Pearl Jam Road: 10/22/90 Seattle | 12/22/90 Seattle, Moore Theater | 9/29/92 Seattle, Magnusson Park, Drop in the Park | 9/5/93 The Gorge, with Neil Young and Blind Melon | 7/20/06 Portland, Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall with Sleater-Kinney | 7/22/06 The Gorge, 10/21/06 Mountain View, Shoreline Ampitheatre, Bridge School Benefit | 9/21/09 Seattle | 9/22/09 Seattle | 9/26/09 Portland, OR | 7/14/2011 Eddie Vedder, Portland, OR | 11/29/13 Portland, OR0

I’m also a dad but I have to say this is my least favourite Pearl Jam song ever.I LOVE the new album apart from this song, and I can’t believe they didn’t have a better song to put in its place. It’s such a basic melody and the lyrics are so cringe it’s embarrassing. These guys are good enough songwriters that they can be more subtle in their lyrics - this sounds like it was written by a random blues dad for his daughter’s surprise 21st birthday party.PJ has been my favourite band for 30 years now but I’ve never enjoyed Ed’s solo stuff (except Into the Wild). This is 100% an Ed solo song.0

Weakest song on the album IMO0

Yeah, it definitely teeters on embarrassing for me as well. Like I said earlier in this thread, at least it's a one off. I feel like the album bounces right back with the last two tracks being strong. Unfortunately, there are a few PJ albums where less would've been more. This one would've still clocked in at 10 songs/44 minutes had they left this one off, which is perfectly acceptable for a full length LP (see early KISS and Van Halen sometimes clocking in at 9 songs and under 35 minutes). If they didn't have another strong one on the backburner, keep it at ten tracks.omcollins said:I’m also a dad but I have to say this is my least favourite Pearl Jam song ever.I LOVE the new album apart from this song, and I can’t believe they didn’t have a better song to put in its place. I'm a father to 3 girl cats, lol. But even if I wasn't, I still think this song grooves. I also have this track in my bottom 3, but I still enjoy this song very much.
This album is so good that I still love my least favorite songs on it. None of them are skippable IMO, and join to the other songs so nicely.I'm spinning, oh-oh-oh I'm spinning0 -

I love a lot of the songs on the album, but can't get into this one. I have been skipping it. It ruins the flow for me.

Father of two daughters similarly aged to Eddie's and actually laughed out loud in the theatre at this song as it's just so cheesy.
Sure I can relate to the lyrics, but they are executed so poorly because of how literal they are. Almost like a B-Side for a pop country artist.
All that said, the melody feels like a direct rip off of some old song with just a few tweaks to make it his own and I'm having a hell of a time placing it. Anyone else figure it out.1993-08-12 - Edmonton, AB, Convention Centre

You hit the nail on the head with “how literal they are”. I don’t know where you live but here in Scotland when the Primary 7 kids (11-12 years old) leave primary school for high school, the music teacher usually helps write a song for the kids to sing in their final primary school assembly. This is the level of lyrics in Something Special, and the melody is similarly basic.bone said:Father of two daughters similarly aged to Eddie's and actually laughed out loud in the theatre at this song as it's just so cheesy.

Perfect description, better than my B-Side country song analogy. This is totally a grade school music teacher lyrics. You'd love them and think they are adorable hearing them from somebody you know personally, but I just expect better from Eddie. But it's all good, I love the fact he's in a mindset that he feels good about writing a song like this as it means he's truly happy with his life as a father. I would not have expected that out of him with how he talked in the 90s.omcollins said:

The Beatles write basic lyrics and melodies and it did them just fine. Absolutely nothing wrong with this particular song. Some people don’t like it and that’s fine, but don’t act like every song needs to be this complex thing.I died. I died and you just stood there. I died and you watched. I died and you walked by and said no. I'm dead.0

Father of five and just can’t get into this one. For me, This and wreckage are the two clunkers on the new album.I'll ride the wave where it takes me......0

The song is just ok. Lyrics are a bit clunky. The problem is it doesn't really fit on the album. Should have saved it for Lost Dogs 2.03 Las Vegas

I like the song, from a dad's perspective. I prefer Ed's solo song "Skipping" from the Every Mother Counts album in a more sentimental parent way
https://youtu.be/0cEYZUO9XR4?si=hnEXg2kKbodEBZjn
But I dig them both for different reasons, though I think it helps connect to those kinds of songs when you are a parent. Does not mean they are not enjoyable if you don't have kids, its just...different.0
