Something Special
As a dad of three amazing daughters, gotta say, this song hit me hard. Not sure I'm gonna be able to make it through this live without shedding a tear or two.
"Oh if the night grows long, you're not feeling loved, I will be there. and not 'cause it's my job, I work for free because you're ... so special."

DAD also, but did not like the song at all, lyrics aside (meaning I love the lyrics). Added edit: It is just a soft ass Christmas single to me. amazing intent, but this is a rock and roll band, not "Bread" the bandPost edited by hrd2imgn on0

I have no kids and love this song...the cheese is thick, but the vibe is strong!0

Glad some people like the song. Don’t think it fits on a PJ/this album.0

No one can appreciate the symmetry of the man who wrote Alive & Release writing about how much he loves being a dad 12 albums later? It’s a nice full circle moment.0

My thoughts exactly. A lot of us have grown up with this band, and have may shared experiences, going from being young, trying to find direction and exercising our demons, to growing up to being parents who want nothing more than our children to be happy and loved. I know a lot of fans are not connecting with this song, but, personally, one of my faves, and not just limited to this album.kmcmanus said:No one can appreciate the symmetry of the man who wrote Alive & Release writing about how much he loves being a dad 12 albums later? Also, has anyone on the band talked about it on SiriusXM today? The time I caught it, it was the one song that didn't have an intro from a band memberNashville '00

I don't think the words are cheesy at all, but the music...Would have liked something...else. Maybe he wanted something more youthful, because its about his daughters. Olivia said its her favorite song. I value that she appreciated it.kmcmanus said:No one can appreciate the symmetry of the man who wrote Alive & Release writing about how much he loves being a dad 12 albums later? When I first heard the snippet, I didn't like this. But after spinning the album, I don't mind this at all and I really dig the bass line. It grooves nicely. A nice ballad placed well within the context of the album flow.
I'm actually having a hard time picking which track is my least favorite, because they all are growing on me with each listen. None of these songs are skippable. I just let it play.
I'm experiencing a cool effect from this album, where each song seems to lift up the other songs.I'm spinning, oh-oh-oh I'm spinning0 -
Perfect accompaniment to Thin Air.Like Thin Air Part 2, 24 years down the line
and I love it0 -

This song has such a great beat. The lyrics are as human as can be. That’s Ed! ❤️I died. I died and you just stood there. I died and you watched. I died and you walked by and said no. I'm dead.0

Same here, three kids. My wife started crying immediately, haha.Appeared to be an animal, yet so polite.0

I did catch a Jeff intro to the song... said something about it being Eddie's baby. Also said something along the lines of the album needing something like that, a bit more uplifting track. Why? Ten didn't veer into cheese... neither did Vs. Gigaton for that matter... 12 tunes that don't approach cheeseVedder4Prez said:Also, has anyone on the band talked about it on SiriusXM today? Ed also had a long-winded Ed-type intro... main point being that they've all raised good kids that are turning into young adults, and now it's up to the kids... written in the spirit of pride, gratitude and hope about his kids.
My immediate feeling is it kind of has the hokey feeling of something like "Let the Records Play"... however, the problem with Lightning Bolt, for me, was "Let the Records Play" and "Sleeping By Myself" back-to-back... I think that is a strong album up until that stretch. "Something Special" is just one song and I can appreciate something a little cheese from a proud 59 year old Ed.
