Always stand up when shaking hands.
    Always walk a woman home.
Wear a tie even when it might be overdressed.
    Do the dishes.
    Send handwritten thank you notes.
Err on the side of being a gentleman.
So few seem to get it these days.

These are really great, thank you!
My wife has some interesting and somewhat unusual characteristics.  She describes herself as a "naturally liberated woman", and says that is because she learned to be that way because her G.I. generation mother was.  She's kind but firm in her opinions (when she has a strong opinion about something), capable, smart, very independent yet helpful.  But she's also "old fashioned" in some ways. She likes it when I open and close the car door for her (wouldn't anyone do that for the Queen? lol) I sometimes get funny looks from people when they see me do that, but I don't care.  It makes my wife happy and I always feel great when I do something that makes her happy.
But then, because it has become a habit, one day I did the same for the mother of my godchildren and she grabbed the door out of my hand, glared at me, and said, "I'm capable of doing that!"  It was embarrassing, but it was also a good lesson: know what works and doesn't work for others.  As a long-time close friend, I still love my godchildren's mother, and she still loves me, and knowing her boundaries strengthens that bond. But I'll still err on the side of being a gentleman, so if I ever do that to any of you and you don't like it, reprimand gently, please, lol.  I'll remember your preference.

Or anyone!  Sometimes when our post office is really busy, I'll open or hold the door for someone, and then someone else comes along, and then another, and pretty soon I just tell people I'm the doorman.

One of my all time favourite Michael Stipe lyrics is from ‘Blue’ on Collapse Into Now. Definitely words that I remind myself of pretty regularly:

“I am made by my times
I am a creation of now
Shaken with the cracks and crevices
    I'm not giving up easy
    I will not fold
    I don't have much
But what I have is gold

This is my time and I am thrilled to be alive”
    “Do not postpone happiness”
    (Jeff Tweedy, Sydney 2007)

“Put yer good money on the sunrise”
    (Tim Rogers)

To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.
