    My current bass setup:

I’m a big EQD fan (obvi) & was thinking of adding a fuzz… maybe a Hoof or Hizumitas, but the board’s pretty full up as it is… it might also be redundant what w/ the DS1, WW & Plumes.

Cool board! Have you ever tried the SansAmp later in the chain, after you OD and distortion?

Yeah man, those things are great. They did a great job making them react to slamming the front end like a tube amp reacts.

I use mine all the time too and I use a lot of effects with bass. Big Muffs, Rats and any manner of boosters take the SansAmp to a whole new level.

Took your advice and put the Sansamp last... good call, it sounds fantastic.

I've also added a fuzz pedal since posting this... it's a game changer, I love it.

That board is almost as cool as that pedal named Private Beaver.

Of course Private Beaver is a fuzz pedal.  :D

I'm addicted to Earthquaker Devices out of Akron... I got their Hoof fuzz pedal in July and it's turned out to be a game changer.

spent all day yesterday working on my clean board for my princeton and matchless. swapped a bunch of things off and went back to velcro instead of zip ties.

That's a cool board with tons of overdrive options! Do you have some that are always on and stack others as needed?

    thanks man.

it depends on the situation and the guitar i am playing. compressor is on a lot of the time with most guitars. with a strat or tele i will usually have the tumnus on all the time. if not the tumnus then the bluesbreaker side of the protein with the steel string are stacked a lot of the time. for humbuckers the primary drive is the blue note or both sides of the protein. the 1991 and 1981 probably get used the least because they can get pretty dirty, but to me it is nice to have those options on there. i haven't found anything to really stack with the 1981, but i just built this yesterday so i haven't had a lot of time to play with that one.

A buddy of mine has a lot of the same pedals as you. He usually uses a Turbo Rat or a Wren and Cuff Box of War to stack with the Bluesbreaker type overdrives. Sounds massive!

I found that Bluesbreakers are really great for low to mid-gain but it is more difficult to find other pedals to stack with them compared to say, Tube Screamer circuits.

Having a Klone always on at the start of the chain seems to help the Bluesbreaker too, especially if you're going after higher distortion from your amp or other pedals later in the chain.

dude, a rat pedal with a bluesbreaker is something i haven't tried yet!! i have the bowman audio endeavors threshold maximizer that is his version of a rat that i can totally try with my morning glory! didn't even think of that combo, as the rat gets pretty dirty on its own.

yeah i love the bluesbreaker circuit. it has become one of my favorites. like you said, especially with low to mid gain.

i can't wait to try the rat with the mg!

I'm interested to hear what you think! His go-to is the Turbo Rat which uses LED clipping diodes. It is sharper and more "open" sounding than the silicon diodes in a typical Rat circuit. Much more output, too. He also plays Jazzmasters with 1M ohm pots so I expect a Strat, Tele or Les Paul will be a different experience. YMMV, of course.

Even though Rats have been around forever, I still find myself being surprised by just how many different uses I can find for one. Anywhere from a dirty boost to screaming distortion, and everything in between. Especially for gigging cover bands and studio sessions, a good Rat is a great tool to have on hand.

During lockdown, I built a bunch of pedals, some from kits and some of my own. I dug deep into the different variations of Rat pedals and ended up learning a lot about them. As a result, the main OD/distortion I use for bass is one I built based on the Rat.

i haven't had a chance to try those two together yet. it sounds like the rat you are talking about is different than what bowman built with the 308 diodes. i have played a few rats over the years and always liked them, but with my old marshall they can get kind of ice picky with the treble. have to dial the tone knob down a bit, which i am not used to doing. here is the bowman video link with luke from the dirty nil talking about it.

i'd love to try building a pedal but i feel like i need to learn how to solder first before i ruin things, haha.

dude, i stacked my morning glory, low gain setting, into the threshold maximizer. i ran it into my clean set matchless, and that stack made that amp sound like a fucking monster! in a good way. thanks for the suggestion!! i am going to play around with it a little more. the funniest thing is, with as much gain as those two pedal put out together, it still cleans up very well by rolling guitar volume off. i didn't expect that. i ended up settling on the tm on all the time, and then goosing it with the morning glory. it does sound great!! here is how i had them set.
