Washing Your Hands Before You Eat / Serve Food

Years ago, I walked by a small greasy spoon on Market street in San Francisco where you could see the food prep area through a window facing out on the street. I saw this guy who was fixing someones meal pick his nose and then went right back to working with the food- no gloves and didn't was his hands. Gross!I've had food poisoning twice from things I picked up eating out. Both times, the illness sent me to the hospital. The second time left me unconscious in the hospital for three days.Eating out is dicey business."It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0

It's best not to peek behind the curtain or you would never eat out. Have you read Kitchen Confidential? Great book, but a little scary in terms of what goes on in restaurants.

Growing up in California in the 70's and 80's, eating at Jack in the Box was like playing Russian Roulette when it came to food poisoning. You knew it was coming, you just didn't know when. Fortunately I never had to go the hospital, just a day or two of misery a few times.brianlux said:Years ago, I walked by a small greasy spoon on Market street in San Francisco where you could see the food prep area through a window facing out on the street. I totally get that this stuff happens...I just can't eat the food once I know it is going on at a specific spot.

Agreed! I don't eat out very often these day but when I do- it's almost always to places I know and trust. And even then, as much as I like fresh fruits and vegetables, when I eat out, it's pretty much strictly cooked food and a prayer.
