Washing Your Hands Before You Eat / Serve Food

The 8 yr old wanted fried chicken for dinner.  Mrs FMe was out for the evening so it was just the two of us.  I found a new place that looked decent enough nearby and brought him there.
Order him a 4 piece friend chicken tender, fries, and a water.
Bring him to the bathroom to wash his hands while we wait for his food.
Look all over...no soap in the men's room.
No soap dispenser...no hand soap bottle or anything.
I bring him back out to the dining room and to the counter.
Asked the first person I could get the attention of to see about getting us a new bottle of soap, they are out in the men's room.
Guy says he will ask the manager on duty.
MOD comes over and tells me he is sorry but will ask the store's manager, his boss, to order some as they don't have any.
This is the actual exchange from that point:

Me:  oh.  Um, ok, can you just bring me whatever you use?
MoD:  I don't have any.
Me: no, I can see your sink there and the sign that says you need to wash your hands...can we come back and wash there?
MoD:  we don't have any soap
Me:  I don't think I understand.  You don't have any soap in the place?  None here, none in the men's room, none in the women's room?
MoD:  no.
Me:  how do you wash your hands?
MoD:  we use hot water.
Me:  you use hot water?
MoD:  yes.  We just opened yesterday.
Me: but no soap?  And you prepare people's food?  (Looks at workers...)  without gloves?  Yesterday and today?
MoD:  yes.
Me: give me my money back
MoD:  ok, I'm sorry.
Me:  this is disgusting

My kid was just standing there, watching.
They took my receipt and reversed the charge on my card.

I turned around and there were two couples in line.
The first moved to the counter and started ordering.
The other looked like they were discussing what to do.

When we got outside my son said "I feel sorry for the people who work there. "

I agreed.

What in the actual fuck?!?!

What would you have done?

    What would you have done?

I would have at least thought about reporting them to the better business bureau or the local county health department.  Would I have actually done that?  I don't know.  I don't like to rat people out but with all the health concerns these days... sure would be tempted to.

What kind of iwner/manager doesn't think of employee or health cleanliness as they set up a restaurant?  At all.
One who doesn't care about it / wash their own hands, etc.   At least one employee had to have asked about it, right?
    Just utterly disgusting.
I'm still grossed out and also laughing in wonder at this.
Tempted to go back today and check to see if they addressed.

The last time I ate anything from a fast food joint was from 5guys but I didn’t take a close look I was starving! Good call on leaving and asking for your $$$ back. Maybe with young kids it pays to keep frozen fries & chicken tenders in your freezer but I understand there’s nothing better than taking kids out for some fast food! So what did you eat?

It was a 'fast casual' place, not a McDonald's type.  I've not eaten at a McDonalds, Wendy's, BK, etc. since I swore them off for good in 2003.  Never brought the kid there. He can go with his grandparents or friends or whatever, but not with me.
(I know there is not a huge difference but the overall shittyness of those chains made me promise to never support a big chain of drive thru type fast food again.)

We ended up going to a place nearby that served friend chicken among other things...had to wait but he was very happy with it.
(And, perhaps this was a lesson of sorts to him.)

Also, it is not like I don't know that most restaurants have nasty stuff going down but the overall thought that the place doesn't have any soap in it whatsoever was mind blowing.

Yeah it’s best not to know what goes at the back of food establishment’s but like you said no soap! That meant none of the employees had clean hands lol I guess hot water is better than nothing but damn

Years ago, I walked by a small greasy spoon on Market street in San Francisco where you could see the food prep area through a window facing out on the street.  I saw this guy who was fixing someones meal pick his nose and then went right back to working with the food- no gloves and didn't was his hands.  Gross!
I've had food poisoning twice from things I picked up eating out.  Both times, the illness sent me to the hospital.  The second time left me unconscious in the hospital for three days.
    Eating out is dicey business.

It's best not to peek behind the curtain or you would never eat out. Have you read Kitchen Confidential? Great book, but a little scary in terms of what goes on in restaurants.

Growing up in California in the 70's and 80's, eating at Jack in the Box was like playing Russian Roulette when it came to food poisoning. You knew it was coming, you just didn't know when. Fortunately I never had to go the hospital, just a day or two of misery a few times.

    Yes and yes.  Great book.
I totally get that this stuff happens...I just can't eat the food once I know it is going on at a specific spot.

Agreed!  I don't eat out very often these day but when I do- it's almost always to places I know and trust.  And even then, as much as I like fresh fruits and vegetables, when I eat out, it's pretty much strictly cooked food and a prayer.
