    Drag show restaurant files federal lawsuit against Florida and Gov. DeSantis
    Today

    ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A popular Orlando restaurant that regularly features drag shows filed a federal lawsuit against the state of Florida and Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday, less than a week after he signed a bill that targets drag performances.

    The lawsuit filed in Orlando federal court by the owner of Hamburger Mary’s Orlando claims the state is depriving the business of its First Amendment rights to free expression. The restaurant is asking the court to temporarily stop the law from taking effect while the case moves forward.

    DeSantis has made anti-LGBTQ+ legislation a large part of his agenda as he prepares to seek the Republican presidential nomination. He signed the bill restricting drag performances — along with bills that ban gender-affirming care for minors, restrict discussion of personal pronouns in schools and force people to use certain bathrooms — last Wednesday in front of a cheering crowd at the evangelical Cambridge Christian School in Tampa.

    Hamburger Mary’s Bar & Grille has more than a dozen locations around the U.S., with the Orlando restaurant opening in 2008. According to the lawsuit, the restaurant had hosted “family friendly” drag shows on Sundays, but the new Florida law is forcing them to ban children from all shows. This has led to a 20% drop in Sunday bookings.

    Proponents of the legislation have said the law is meant to keep children from viewing sexually explicit performances. Lawyers for the business argue the new law is so broad and vague that it could be applied to almost any performance that involves a man dressing up like a woman, even if the performance isn't sexual in nature. The lawsuit said the business owners can't risk having their business or liquor licenses suspended or risk facing criminal prosecution by allowing children at the shows.

    The governor's office didn't immediately respond to a message seeking comment about the lawsuit.

    I think a lot of people have already said this, myself included, but I'm going to say it again. Please stop lumping all people from one state together. If the state is Red, not everyone votes/feels that way & the same goes for Blue states. You basically just said that everyone in 2 states is ok with electing a Nazi. I get it - you don't like how those states are doing pretty much everything. You fail to realize that there are people within those states that don't fit your mold. I am from Texas and we may be moving back there soon, so it irks me a bit to see such close-minded statements. I currently live in Missouri - does that mean that I believe in every fucked up law that exists here? In two words, fuck no.

    Citizens of states elect their representatives to office by either voting or not voting, as the case may be. Citizens of both Tejas and Flo Rida via the majorities that have voted have elected their representatives and the percentage of non-voters are either okay with the results or don’t seem to give a fuck that nazi tinged authoritarianism is on the march. Thus, both states, by about 2/3 to 1/3, maybe 3/4 to 1/4, have populations that I don’t want anything to do with. If I were you, and I’m not, and you are yours, I’d reconsider moving to Tejas but regardless, I wish you the best. ‘Murica is fucked after 8 million more voted for POOTWH after 4 years of knowing what we knew and that is the other major political party now. I won’t live long enough to see it swing back to “reasonableness.”

     I’m sorry, but a populations tolerance for what is going on in those states taints everyone. Just ask the Germans.

    I'm not going to attack you. There is no point and that is not how I operate. You and I probably agree on a lot of things, but we definitely disagree here & that's ok. By your rationale, every state is "tainted" & we are all fucked. 

    I appreciate your concern about where we move, but that is none of your concern at all. We are not moving there with blinders on about what is going on in the state, not at all. We also didn't have blinders on when we moved to Oregon or Missouri, both of which have major cultural, political & societal flaws. I think that's the difference between you and I on this issue, I can see through the flaws and actually see the good things that any city or state can provide. 

    If we move, I plan on being active there just like I am here and like I was in Oregon. I'm not going to subscribe to the doom and gloom narrative, but rather try to make things better.

    I think that making sweeping accusations and statements about an entire population (whether city, state or national) is a terrible way to view the world - and a dangerous one.
