I had a little scare with my 16 year old cat this week. For the last month or so off and on he has been coughing. It looks like when they are trying to hack up a hairball but nothing comes up. That is what I thought it was. He had his routine checkup and bloodwork a few days ago and I mentioned it to the vet. She said it sounded like coughing and at his age recommended a chest X-ray. Of course my mind goes to lung cancer. Anyway, after worrying about that for two days I got the results today. He has mild asthma. Since his coughing is only sporadic (he hasn’t coughed in four days that I have seen). The vet said we can just monitor it and if it gets worse we can do a kitty inhaler. She said his lungs sound clear so he is not in any distress. Also, his blood work came back stellar for his age. Big sigh of relief!
Glad it wasn’t more serious. If you do have to go the inhaler route (& it’s a new thing for you), let me know if you need any tips.

We had to give Alice an inhaler twice a day for the last few years of her life. It was a pain in the ass at first, but got easier over time.

Thanks. We haven’t gotten to that point yet. She also said we could try a short course of oral steroids if needed. But since the coughing seems to have stopped I am going with the wait and see route. The vet thought that was fine. If I end up needing to give him an inhaler in the future I am sure I will ask for advice. I am thinking of getting an air purifier as well. NYC apartments get really dusty. It might be useful for me as well.

We've got a cat that is emotionally attached to my youngest daughter. He's 10...she's 21 so she has cuddled him since she was 11.

Problem is that she is gone a lot. She might stay at her boyfriend's house for a few days and the cat just loses his mind. He sits outside her door and cries because he's convinced she's in there. This had turned into him marking things in the house and it's driving us crazy. Anything new that comes in the house is a target. If an Amazon box sits by the door too long he'll mark it. He marked my goddamn Led Zeppelin box sets.

I love him but he's driving us crazy. We tried prozac but we can only give him a topical which we have to rub inside his ear because giving him pills is too traumatic. A local pharmacy said they could mix the prozac with chicken flavored shit but he hated that too. I tasted it....it was bitter as hell.

I don't think the prozac is working. When we first started it he seemed to gain some weight so I thought it was working but his misery (and ours) continues.

 actually she's on y lap now. However Kyra is a better "lap cat". She is constantly on there, especially if i'm chillin' on the sofa. She stays there forever.

    That's a good idea.

Similar situation: my Chains has had a tough couple of months... in addition to us bringing the new little psycho into the house, my wife has had to spend a lot of nights away this last month helping her parents navigate some tough health care situations... She's definitely Chains' preferred human and despite my extra efforts to engage & play & give her attention, I still have a pretty sad cat on my hands. Luckily the mrs. came home today and should be home at least through the end of next week.

No bother to the little psycho however, she's doing just fine.

Since you asked about them in the other thread @glowgirl - it’s a one step forward two steps backward type scenario over here.  :D

Alternating between cuddling and fighting. Sounds like a couple to me 😀

Well this is a first, I have two cats on my lap (and I’m shocked it’s these two) . They are pretty much butt to butt against each other 😛

That’s great. Only one of my cats ever sits directly on my lap. The other only will sit next to me.

Kyra is always on my lap, she's a great lap kitty. Kia's coming around to sit on my lap, she does it every so often. Willow, my first cat, wasn't much of a lap cat. I think she only sat on my lap like 5 times or so. Kali was half and half. She would get on my lap everyday, but only to "knead". Sometimes she would get off when she was done and other times she would stay there for awhile, but You couldn't move to much cause she would get off if i made a sudden movement.

Cute! They look a little snuggly there. It's happening.
