Is Vedder a marketing genius (Self-titled album, 2006)

Heard on the very interesting talk with Brad Klausen on the State of Love & Trust podcast.

Do you agree with Eddie? Or should they have had a different cover for this album?

I find it very much a (non-attractive) clash that the inside and the great looking 7 inch single covers had one style. And then the front cover and the tour t-shirts (WHY THE FUCK DID I BUT ONE IN SMALL AT THE TIME? WHAT WAS I THINKING? had a completely different bright blue avocado style. With the weird shadow.

Cool that Brad did the font himself though. The Era of elegant sans serif-fonts that started with Yield.

When I see an avocado, I don’t think of this record. I think, “am I 2 days too early to use this, or I am 29 minutes too late”
  • Maybe I'm in the minority but I think it's a great album cover. Much prefer that to the Backspacer or Lightning Bolt Covers.

I agree. And lame album title. With some exceptions (White Album, Black Album), I’m not big on self-titling albums that’s not a debut album. Like Alice in Chains’ third album for instance. And certainly this album. You’re stuck giving them silly nicknames like “Avocado,” or in the case of Alice In Chains, “Tripod” (for the three-legged dog on the cover).

Avocados and Pearl Jam are tied together for me. Not in every day life while buying an avocado but my avocado socks are definitely Pear Jam socks.
Love the album and I find the nickname funny. I’m very easily amused though

I always believe their titles have meanings, some are pretty obvious. I assumed this one, being their first free from their record label, was self titled to show they are in charge now. Maybe they were just lazy, but kinda makes sense to me.

Don’t get the Marketing genius aspect here. Does Ed own an Avocado farm? I have avocados around always and have never once thought of this album. Now Yield signs are a totally different story

  • Love the album, indifferent to the cover. I think the only album cover of theirs I really don't like is Backspacer, which is fitting, it's probably my least favorite record.

I eat avocados almost three times a week! I haven’t listen to Avocado in years but I love the album cover and don’t care if the album didn’t really have a title, I just love Avocados.

Before the album, avocados weren't "in". Now they're everywhere. Coincidence?
