    For sure!  I remember the first time I heard Damn the Torpedoes shortly after it was released (which, surprisingly, was also the first T.P. I had ever remembered hearing).  I was stunned.  What a record!

    I'm also stunned that Soundgarden is beating Petty.  How is this possible???

    Some people will like SG more than TP and I am cool with that, but I would agree with you here. Wildflowers is magic.

    But, that record is better than almost any record, imo.
    No way I consider Soundgarden the best American band ever, but I am a rocker and head to head I gotta rock.

    To add, I have nothing bad to say about Tom Petty.  Some great music.  Not my bag, but I still love many of the songs.

    Kidding - but I still voted them down. They're just not my wheelhouse. A stellar career and catalogue nonetheless.

    Definitely surprising, but when CC passed away a lot of musicians/singers commented that he was one of, if not the best singer in rock music ever. In the pantheon of hard rock singers, CC is an icon…. No one sang like he did.  The band itself was very influential,  in a way they were a “musicians band” that got very popular because of their iconic lead singer. The antithesis of this would be King’s X, the “musicians band” which is probably the most underrated band in rock history.

    as I said before, SG is one of my faves, and I easily listen to them way more than Metallica or TP, but the influence of the latter two just can't be overstated.

    I think SG has a much better batting average and forebears of the grunge explosions they had quite impact.

    I don’t think Petty is as influential as most other bands of their stature and sort of went with the flow of what was popular until they were firmly established. Huge fan but I wouldn’t put him in my top 5 American bands. Obviously a deep catalog and more well known classics than just about anybody.

    Well TP is really a derivative of the Byrds and the Laurel Canyon sound.  I agree that they are not necessarily 'influential', but he did his own thing, on his terms.  And his fans span country music to hard rock and everything in between.  The mainstream cultural impact of Full Moon Fever is pretty significant too.  I would argue much more than any SG record.  In 1989, you could not go anywhere without hearing something from Full Moom.

    We got Mtv in the early 80's and the You Got Lucky video just blew me away.  The whole Mad Max thing with such a cool song was just astounding to my little brain.  Dont' Come Around Here No More tripped me out too.
