    I hate that call, even though I think it was correct. The whole “the defensive back didn’t get his head turned around” stuff is overblown. Makes sense sometimes, but not when the ball hits the defensive player in the back before he actually makes contact with the receiver he’s face-guarding.

    If you make no contact with the receiver prior to touching the ball,  agreed it should never be a penalty.  They are calling the head firm thing too tight.

    This is a criticism of technique.  If he doesn't make contact with the receiver, he should not be flagged, regardless of his poor technique.  Face guarding is not a penalty in the NFL either.
