  • that is just an insane number.
& AFAIK Elder was beating the 'rigged election' drum in the CA recall vote too... had it been a slimmer margin of victory, then what?

Republicans are going to contest every close loss moving forward, and with the distrust that's been sown in the system, it's going to be ugly to say the least.

No, I mean pull fed military and other Fed financial support from their states. Move offices, relocate military bases, stop spending federal money or slow walk it through the agencies that hold the purse strings. You want to play hard ball? Joe can play hardball and should. Not out in public, just do it and stonewall when asked about it. Time to make a choice, either with the Dems as the sign on your office says or you’re not. If you’re not, there’s consequences for you and your state. Sorry. Not sorry.

I’m not sure how to quietly move a military base, but if done in private as a threat Manchin would tweet like a bird to the media and knowing this country, generate enough anger to hand the presidency to trump in 24. The Dems have razor thin margins and independent voters fall for the GOP BS almost every time. As said above they need to win two more senate seats if they want to do dramatic things like ending filibuster and stacking the Court.

Quietly, meaning you don’t hold a presser and say you’ve decided to relocate, close, move such and such because Senator so and so aren’t Dems and are really repubs. Just do it. Even floating the idea can have an impact. Neither of those two have given any hint as to the “why” they’re against the dem agenda or what the alternative should be. Just saying no to say no. Like repubs do all the time.

As for stacking the court, you do it after a vote on the filibuster. Force their hand. Are you with the Dems or repubs?

I don’t think there is a way in hell Biden can persuade Manchin. It’s basically a Republican seat kept warm by Manchin and no way he turns his back on his conservative voters nor Byrds legacy tied to the filibuster.

The way forward to end the filibuster is win more seats. But we have AOC wearing dresses to attack the rich and also attacking Israel. Not sure how Dems can win the midterms with that message.

Tax the rich, not "attack" the rich. And a bill to stop arming what is arguably an apartheid state is not the same as "attacking" what is arguably an apartheid state.

Did you major in hyperbole at Trump University?

At any rate, both policies would certainly get this voter to the polls in full support.

Her dress was an attack on wealthy Americans. Taxes are viewed with disgust in areas where she needs votes for her party  to remain in the majority. That dress will be advertisement fodder in the midterms. The policy might be wise, but we need to convince uncommitted swing state voters.

The only course I agree with at good ole Trump U is supporting Israel. Supporting terrorist nations will bring Trump back as our dear leader. And The US is a hell of a lot closer to being an apartheid state than Israel.  Arab voters in Israel have equal access to voting unlike minority Americans in many states.

How does a proposed bill to stop arming Israel support terrorist nations?

Also, what exactly is a terrorist nation?

Our domestic terrorist groups likely have more numbers and resources than many foreign terrorist groups, but I don’t know if folks would say that makes the US a terrorist nation, even though we excel at making them at home and abroad.

Arizona Republican resigns after secret recording released

PHOENIX (AP) — A Republican official in Arizona resigned Tuesday from the board overseeing Maricopa County after a recording emerged of him criticizing his GOP colleagues for opposing a review of the 2020 election.

During the meeting recorded surreptitiously last March, Supervisor Steve Chucri suggested two fellow Republican county supervisors opposed the review by Senate Republicans because they nearly lost their own 2020 races.

Chucri apologized in a statement announcing his resignation and said he shouldn't have made the comments, adding “the political landscape has changed for the worst this year.”

“The environment is wrought with toxicity — and all civility and decorum no longer seem to have a place,” Chucri said. “The fixation with the 2020 election results and aftermath have gotten out of control.”

Maricopa County has become Ground Zero in the effort by supporters of former President Donald Trump to use false accusations of fraud to cast doubt on the 2020 election results. Chucri's resignation comes as Trump supporters hired by the state Senate Republicans prepare to release their findings from an unprecedented partisan review of the 2.1 million ballots cast in Maricopa County, the machines that counted them and a variety of other data obtained through a legislative subpoena.

Chucri said his comments about his colleagues are being wrongly used to paint a picture “about a cover-up, scam and other nonsense," and he vouched for the accuracy of the results.

There was no cover-up, the election was not stolen,” Churci said. “Biden won.”

Just wait until that $16T (oops, I had forgot a 1 in front of the 6) in accumulated wealth is wiped out. Those with 401Ks will feel it. The wealthiest? Nah, they'll play it, maybe lose some, but they'll be fine. Fuck the little guy. Again.

  • I figured I put this here and while it speaks to an analysis of the VA governor's race, I'm willing to bet it applies pretty much the same across the US. I copied, what I thought, was the key take away. But we all know race doesn't affect anything, anything at all. Ahhhhh, the appeal of POOTWH.

    • Zachary L. Hertz, Lucas B. Pyle and Brian F. Schaffner

Virginians have started casting ballots for governor. Recent polls suggest a close race. A Monmouth University poll attributed the tight margin in part to the division between urban and rural Virginia.

In this way, the Virginia race is a microcosm of recent trends. In 2020, urban voters supported Joe Biden 2-to-1, while rural areas backed Donald Trump by the same proportion. This urban-rural divide has expanded dramatically in the past decade, reaching its widest point in the last presidential election. What drives this deepening divide — and will we see it again in next year’s midterm elections? Our research suggests that the answer lies in Americans’ ideas about race.

    Jumping to:

Racism proves to be the most important predictor

So which of these factors, if any, is most closely linked to the 32-point gap in 2020 presidential vote choice between urban and rural voters? To answer this question, we calculated the urban-rural divide and used a regression model to control for each factor individually to see whether the urban-rural divide persisted after accounting for each explanation. Put simply, the smaller the remaining urban-rural divide after controlling for an individual factor, the more evidence we have that the factor explains that divide. The graph below summarizes our findings.

The first bar shows that rural Americans of all races were 32 points more likely to vote for Trump than urban voters. When we controlled for evangelicalism, the urban-rural divide dropped by just six percentage points. In other words, even after accounting for born-again Christianity’s prevalence in rural areas, a 26-point gap in vote choice between urban and rural Americans remains, suggesting that faith-related differences are relatively limited for understanding Republicans’ rural strength.

Accounting for gun ownership closes the urban-rural divide more than faith, reducing the gap to 21 points. However, most of the urban-rural divide remains unexplained even after accounting for higher rates of gun ownership in rural areas.

Racial attitudes among all Americans best explain the gap in vote choices between rural and urban areas. Controlling for racism denial, the gap in vote choice between rural and urban Americans drops to just eight percentage points. In other words, the different rates of racism denial among rural and urban Americans appears to explain about three-quarters of the urban-rural gap in voting for Trump.

To put our findings another way, if voters in urban and rural areas acknowledged White privilege at the same rate, the urban-rural voting divide would be relatively small, just eight points. That the divide is actually 32 points speaks to the powerful role that racism plays in fueling this gap. Perhaps it’s no surprise, then, that Virginia Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin attacked the teaching of critical race theory, making it a cornerstone of his campaign.

Our findings suggest that messaging isn’t the problem, as Carville asserted. Rather, rural Americans prefer Trump’s racially charged politics and denial that racism exists. Fueled by a core disagreement over racism in the United States, the urban-rural divide is likely to continue in 2021 and beyond.

    Hypocrisy

    891
    67

I've been covering politics since the time of Cicero (well maybe not exactly), and let's put it this way - if you could make hay out of hypocrisy, I've seen enough to feed all the herds of American livestock. But what is happening now in our nation's capital, and radiating throughout the country, is enough to put even the most cynical of politicians of past eras to shame.

I fear that we don't have an adequate framework to make complete sense of the depravity and disingenuousness of what is taking place. Basically, we have one political party at the national level, the Republicans, who have long since ceded any pretense of actually doing the work of government, namely making policies to solve problems. Instead, it is raw power for power's sake, and that has turned Congress into what is in essence largely a troll farm on their side of the aisle. You stand out by “owning the libs” on Fox News (or an even more troll-inducing platform). You don’t stand out, or maybe better put you stand out in the wrong way, if you actually try to work on the major issues of the day. It’s all Dr. Seuss and not nearly enough supporting the doctors fighting the pandemic.

To say this brings me no pleasure. Our government was designed for passionate debates over principles (or at least prerogatives) that then were meant to resolve, whenever possible, in compromise. We don’t need one-party rule. We need a marketplace of ideas. But the only marketplace open for business right now in Washington is WITHIN the Democratic Party. What we should have is the will of the majority, with significant concessions for the minority. Now, with the abuse of the filibuster, the denial of basic democratic norms, and the utter bad faith of both the leaders and the followers in the Republican caucus, we have a spectacle of the absurd that is downright dangerous.

Of course none of this is new, but what set me off this evening is following the descent towards a shutdown of the government and the chilling possibility of a default on the nation’s debt. For many in the Beltway “In Crowd,” this is being covered as sport, a fight on the line of scrimmage between opposing political forces. But this is not a game. This is not a case of winners and losers, but a situation where the entire nation is in danger of losing. This isn’t a showdown. This isn’t a question of tactics. It’s extortion. After running up debt with tax cuts and pandemic spending, the Republicans now see the opportunity to stick it to the Democrats. Now, politics is a tough business, it can be bare knuckles. But this is again not a fight over anything other than holding our government and economy hostage.

To write all of this is not to give Democrats a free pass. Their proposals must be analyzed and questioned. Their internal debates deserve to be covered. As the governing party, they need to be scrutinized. But in doing so, we can’t lose sight of the larger context. Republicans only worry about the debt when they are out of power. They see nothing wrong with pouring trillions of dollars into mismanaged foreign wars, but heaven forbid we spend a fraction of that trying to protect our planet against climate change.

It takes no courage to be a cynic. It’s much easier to throw barbs from the sidelines than to try to execute on the field of play. Shamelessness and hypocrisy are bosom buddies and they are living rent-free in the GOP. All serious people know we can’t default on our debt, that we have to work hard to solve difficult problems, that to do so will require bridging our differences. Sadly, to be a serious person as an elected Republican in today’s environment is to be a pariah. It’s all memes, media hits, and mendacity.

  • Yea, drain the swamp. Suckers. FEC filings show she files for reimbursement for mileage (never mind that she’d have to drive more miles than the circumference of the earth for such reimbursement and only held one in district campaign event for the filing period) for $22K, uses it to pay off a $20K lien against her restaurant, Shooters Bar & Grill, for non payment of local unemployment insurance taxes and then uses campaign donations to pay rent. On top of that, her business lost $129K last year. She representing yo!

Maybe some of the business owners on here can explain how this works?

Conservative Koch network disavows critical race theory bans
    By THOMAS BEAUMONT
    Today

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — As conservative political groups mobilize to ban in schools what they call critical race theory, one prominent backer of Republican causes and candidates is notably absent.

Leaders in the network built by the billionaire Koch family say they oppose government bans and efforts to recall school board members over teaching about race and history in schools. While they note they don't agree with the ideas at the center of the fight, they argue the government bans, now enacted in 11 states, stifle debate essential to democracy.

“Using government to ban ideas, even those we disagree with, is also counter to core American principles — the principles that help drive social progress,” said Evan Feinberg, executive director of the Koch-affiliated Stand Together Foundation.

That position is in line with the network's long-held libertarian streak. But it has sparked fresh charges of hypocrisy from the megadonor's critics. After spending years pouring money into conservative groups, the Koch groups cannot distance themselves from the movement it helped build, they argue.

“They have this nice position they want to tout from a P.R. standpoint. But their money has gone to these groups that have the opposite effect on that agenda," said Lisa Graves, board president for the liberal watchdog group Center for Media and Democracy.

The Koch organization first went public with its position last spring, as state lawmakers and conservative groups began passing legislation that bans from classrooms specific concepts, including the idea that racism is systemic in society and the U.S. legal system.

The efforts were prompted in part by backlash to The 1619 Project, a New York Times Magazine initiative aimed at rethinking the role of slavery in the nation's history and development.

In a letter published in The Chronicle of Higher Education in May, Charlie Ruger, the Charles Koch Foundation’s vice president of philanthropy, described Republicans' push to ban these concepts from schools as a gag on free expression.

“Both learning and research require openness to new ideas and the ability to argue productively," Ruger wrote. “That requires standing against censorship."

The Koch political behemoth — a multibillion-dollar umbrella of foundations and a political action committee — was built by brothers Charles and David Koch out of the family’s Kansas-based business empire during the 1980s and 1990s. Though David Koch died in 2018, the network has continued to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into organizations and politics that push for small government, lower taxes, deregulation, free speech, academic freedom and a conservative judiciary.

The organization's opposition to the race and education bans has not kept the groups it has long supported out of the fight. In Wisconsin, parents seeking to recall school board members have received help this year from the Koch-supported Wisconsin Institute for Liberty and Law. The Milwaukee law firm received $310,000 from the Charles Koch Foundation for five years through 2019, the last year with public records available and before critical race theory flared as a GOP rallying point. The money was in the form of grants that were aimed at protecting free speech on college campuses, a Koch spokesman said.

The foundation and the Charles Koch Institute also contributed over the same period about $75,000 to State Policy Network, a conservative think tank that has promoted the bans. However, the grants, also before the 2021 wave of legislation, helped sponsor an annual meeting, an internship and a panel discussion on business, the Koch spokesman said.

Among the most prominent drivers behind the legislative bans was another Koch-backed group, the American Legislative Exchange Council. The Chicago-based conservative policymaking group provides model legislation for conservative lawmakers and has promoted measures to ban critical race theory in schools this year.

The Stand Together Foundation and its related groups contributed $2.7 million to ALEC between 2015 and 2019.

None of it was targeted for limiting schools' curriculum on history and race, and was awarded before the issue became a Republican priority, Stand Together spokesman Bill Riggs said.

In 2020, ALEC continued to receive money from two Koch foundations, donations that were earmarked for trade, regulatory and fiscal policy, as well as advocating free speech and providing scholarships, Riggs said.

Riggs did not disclose the 2020 total given. Only contributions through 2019 are searchable through publicly available tax documents. Contributions for 2020 won’t be available to the public until mid-November.

Riggs accused Koch critics of a “misinformation game” that suggests the network is secretly supporting a policy it does not. He noted Koch groups give to a broad spectrum of organizations that align with some of its founders’ values, if not all of their views.

The Charles Koch Foundation contributed to the Democratic-leaning Brookings Institution in 2018 and 2019 on issues related to foreign policy, Riggs said. Last year, the Koch network helped create Heal America, a faith-based program aimed at fighting “racial injustice with love and redemption,” according to its website. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and television commentator Van Jones, a Democrat, have both participated in events.

Riggs declined to say whether the Koch network would refuse to contribute to groups supporting bans on teaching critical race theory, such as ALEC, noting it prescribes in grant agreements the purpose of the money. He also declined to say whether they would rethink support for political candidates who also back the policy.

The Koch-backed political action committee Americans for Prosperity Action spent at least $9.7 million backing North Carolina Republican Thom Tillis in his tough campaign for reelection to the Senate last year, according to Federal Election Commission reports.

Alabama governor defends plan to use covid relief funds to build new prisons
    By Adela Suliman
September 29 at 8:26 AM ET
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) is hitting back after criticism over plans to use coronavirus pandemic relief funds provided by the federal government to finance the construction of new prisons in the Southern state.
“The Democrat-controlled federal government has never had an issue with throwing trillions of dollars toward their ideological pet projects,” Ivey said in a statement on Tuesday. “These prisons need to be built, and we have crafted a fiscally conservative plan.”
The fallout comes after Ivey convened a special session of the Alabama legislature on Monday to address the state’s ailing prison infrastructure, which she admitted was “broken.” Using the funding in this way, she said, aimed to provide an “Alabama solution to this Alabama problem.”
The plan, backed by Ivey, to build three new prisons and renovate others will involve using up to $400 million from the state’s share of American Rescue Plan funds, according the Associated Press. Alabama has reported almost 15,000 covid-related deaths, according to the latest state data, making it one of the hardest hit parts of the country from the pandemic.
The mammoth $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package, one of the largest economic rescue packages in U.S. history, was approved by Congress in March. The plan provides hundreds of billions of dollars toward vaccination programs, unemployment insurance, personal stimulus checks and state and local government support.
Rescue plan money comes with relatively few restrictions on how governments can spend it, with cities and counties able to use the money to help residents and businesses directly hurt by the pandemic, invest in long-term projects or to supplement budgets hit by the decline in tax revenue, due to shutdown restrictions that curtailed economic activity.
However, the funding plans have been met with some objections. They prompted a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), in which he petitioned the agency to “prevent the misuse of [American Rescue Plan] funding by any state, including Alabama.”
