    Special enrollment for ACA health plans attracts nearly 3 million consumers

    About 2.8 million people signed up for Affordable Care Act health plans during an unprecedented, six-month special enrollment period that President Biden ordered to help Americans find insurance coverage during the coronavirus pandemic, according to figures his administration released Wednesday.

    The additional enrollees push the reliance on ACA health plans to a record level of 12.2 million since the insurance marketplaces that were created under the law first offered health plans in 2014.

    The enrollment tally — along with a raft of figures illustrating that such health plans are affordable for many people — comes as the president is pressing Congress to make permanent a temporary upgrade in federal subsidies for ACA health plans that began early in the spring through a pandemic relief law.

    The final tally, for the sign-ups from mid-February through mid-August, shows that demand for ACA health plans during those months was far below the 8.2 million consumers who chose health plans during the most recent regular enrollment period, which took place during six weeks late last year.

    Biden pointed to the record total in a statement accompanying the enrollment figures Wednesday, saying Americans who have taken advantage of the special enrollment he ordered “will have more security, more breathing room, and more money in their pocket if an illness or accident hits home.”

    The enrollment report, compiled by the Department of Health and Human Services, also shows that in three dozen states relying on the federal insurance marketplace HealthCare.gov, sign-ups were nearly three times greater than those who used special enrollments last year and almost four times greater than in 2019.

    Before the Biden administration threw the doors wide open, consumers had been allowed to enroll outside the regular, yearly enrollment time only if they had a substantial change in their life, such as the birth of a baby, a move or a lost job. Under former president Donald Trump, who opposed the health-care law, health officials tightened the rules to be eligible.

    The figures also show that the proportion of special enrollments among people with middle-class incomes remained quite small but rose from 2 percent last year to 7 percent during this year’s six-month window. For the first time, the upgraded ACA subsidies allowed tax credits for people with incomes above 400 percent of the poverty level — about $51,000 for a single person, or $106,000 for a family of four.

    That change ended years of complaints that ACA plans were unaffordable for people with such incomes because the subsidies were not available to them.

    This and other subsidy expansions are scheduled to last two years, unless Congress extends them.

    No, I mean pull fed military and other Fed financial support from their states. Move offices, relocate military bases, stop spending federal money or slow walk it through the agencies that hold the purse strings. You want to play hard ball? Joe can play hardball and should. Not out in public, just do it and stonewall when asked about it. Time to make a choice, either with the Dems as the sign on your office says or you’re not. The Dems have razor thin margins and independent voters fall for the GOP BS almost every time. As said above they need to win two more senate seats if they want to do dramatic things like ending filibuster and stacking the Court.

    Quietly, meaning you don’t hold a presser and say you’ve decided to relocate, close, move such and such because Senator so and so aren’t Dems and are really repubs. Just do it. Even floating the idea can have an impact. Neither of those two have given any hint as to the “why” they’re against the dem agenda or what the alternative should be. Just saying no to say no. Like repubs do all the time.

    As for stacking the court, you do it after a vote on the filibuster. Force their hand. Are you with the Dems or repubs?

    I don’t think there is a way in hell Biden can persuade Manchin. It’s basically a Republican seat kept warm by Manchin and no way he turns his back on his conservative voters nor Byrds legacy tied to the filibuster.

    The way forward to end the filibuster is win more seats. But we have AOC wearing dresses to attack the rich and also attacking Israel. Not sure how Dems can win the midterms with that message.

    Tax the rich, not "attack" the rich. And a bill to stop arming what is arguably an apartheid state is not the same as "attacking" what is arguably an apartheid state.

    Did you major in hyperbole at Trump University?

    At any rate, both policies would certainly get this voter to the polls in full support.

    Her dress was an attack on wealthy Americans. Taxes are viewed with disgust in areas where she needs votes for her party  to remain in the majority. That dress will be advertisement fodder in the midterms. The policy might be wise, but we need to convince uncommitted swing state voters.

    The only course I agree with at good ole Trump U is supporting Israel. Supporting terrorist nations will bring Trump back as our dear leader. And The US is a hell of a lot closer to being an apartheid state than Israel.  Arab voters in Israel have equal access to voting unlike minority Americans in many states.
