Performing on Colbert this Friday night
Nice! Maybe time to drop a single from the new record?
    forgot they played last night

If someone can explain how Pearl Jam was not able to do this to support Gigaton last year, I'd love to hear it. Thanks
    No kidding.

They did do Dance of the Clairvoyants live (albeit it was for a concert relief fund and not a talk show)
    That wasn't live.

I missed this on Colbert. Thanks for sharing. Cool to see the 'It's Nice To Have You In Birmingham' poster behind Adam....looking forward to seeing them play here again one of these days :sunglasses:

This was incredible.  Also, yes PJ should've figured it out already.  I asked why they haven't yet aloud the other day and my wife replied without missing a beat "probably because they don't want to."  Touche.

So glad I had a second look at these guys years back. Looking forward to their next record. In the meantime, Live Drugs is just a stunning release. Whoever did their live sound is bloody brilliant. I mean they are like an orchestra up there and the mixing is sublime.

This one & Lord Huron’s new LP are what I’m looking forward to the most. Also, just thinking as an amateur musician, any WOD record would be a beast to mix!

Hey all, The War on Drugs' rhythm guitarist Anthony LaMarca put out a new solo album today under his name The Building. The album's called Indianola Pizza Dough. It's fantastic (my cousin - full disclosure) - go check it out on all streaming sites.

Still kicking myself for not grabbing the last live release.

Wouldn't it be funny if the world ended in 2010, with lots of fire?

On the LITD tour, it became clear that one of the defining features of this band is their live performance.  Songs like "Red Eyes," which are polished in their own right, become live warhorses of powerful, crescendoing guitars.  The layers that are hinted at in the studio become overwhelming tangible textures live.

This new album is so strong.  It's sickening.

Bryan Adams?  You're giving him too much credit.

On that note, I'm actually a little tired of the comparisons that critical reviews make.  Yes, there is a Dylan sound at times (namely, the earlier stuff, a few vocal moments on the new album).  I'm sure there is a Henley-ness that is in there (although one that I'm not hearing because I've always thought the Eagles sucked).

But for all the specialization, nuance and niche-writing on the arts that now exists (think: Pitchfork, Rolling Stone etc etc etc), it would stand to reason that someone could creatively write about a given band with a little more originality than "they sound like _______."  What's worse is that most of the comparisons are done within favorable reviews.  Saying that one artist sounds like another is one small metaphor away from saying they ripped someone off, are unoriginal, or have co-opted a sound that was not theirs. By saying they sound like someone else, it's almost an implication that they are actively trying to channel a sound that's been made, rather than write their own music.  I think this band is simultaneously given too little credit and too much of a burden with all the lazy writing that's being done about them.  "They sound like Dylan/Henley/the Cure/etc and they are carrying the banner of American heartland rock."  That's a paraphrase of virtually everything that's been written about them recently.

How about they just wrote a really good album?
I read through and caught up on this thread and I just love this post. Music critics, to me, are so lazy in always saying this artist sounds like that artist or whatever. Not just music critics, but normal people too (all of us here I would say are not normal people). A family member said "you'll love Greta Van Fleet they sound just like Led Zeppelin" (an infamous cliche) - um no they don't "sound like Led Zeppelin" - they don't sound interesting to me much at all actually (sorry to any fans of that band). I think literally the only comparison is male singers with high-pitches voices, and Robert Plant's voice became deeper later on in Zep - how lazy can you be?

Anyway, this is The War On Drugs thread and I really love this band and blew some chances to see them really close by, which was really dumb, but that Live Drugs album is incredible.

That's a song I listened to A LOT on album.  Live, incredible...
I LOVE the "be the writer of your own story..." that he throws in a bunch at the end, which I've seen him do live as well. I don't think that's on the studio version of the song, but really brings it up a notch for me

This is great news! Can't wait to see these guys live.

MSG followed by two shows at a House of Blues? You don't see that kind of thing show up very often in tour dates. Love it!

Jan. 29 – New York, NY @ Madison Square Garden
Jan. 31 – Boston, MA @ House of Blues
Feb. 1 – Boston, MA @ House of Blues
