I am always interested in the collective psyche of certain fanbases based on performance, especially NE/Mid-West fanbases who are locked in 4 lyfe.  Tampa Bay fans who can just turn it off for a decade and go to the beach dont interest me, ha.   Being a Sabres/Bills/Indians fan I see first hand how heartbreak and ineptitude at times can have an effect.  In a lot of ways, it makes people even more engaged and fanatical.  Similar to Boston pre-2001.

It will be interesting to see if the Boston sports collectively take a step back for an extended period (or at least stop winning perpetual championships or pennants), what happens to the younger generation of fans.  This is a group of fans who are spoiled beyond belief from a sports spectating standpoint and know nothing of the 'chase'.  pretty much anyone 32 years old and younger.  Would they just lose interest?

I lived outside Philly for awhile.  They would kind of ferociously support whichever of their 4 major teams was currently a contender, while the other teams who weren't as good would take a back seat, if not relegated to the subconscious.

Sometimes teams need to be bad for awhile to re-kindle the 'chase'.  Look at the Detroit Red Wings.  Early on in Stevie Y's career they were finally emerging from the "Dead Wings" and people in Detroit were crazy about them for years.  Fast forward nearly guaranteed playoff spots every season and a number of cups, they had trouble selling tickets to playoff games eventually.  I bet once they start to do well again, fans will be re-invigorated.

Its interesting to see a lot of Yankees fans too.  They were very spoiled for awhile at least in my generation, and each title seemed to be diminished excitement for them.  Winning a world series became expected and off of other wins, that cant be that much fun.  You lose the whole "Holy Shit It Actually Might Happen!!!" excitement. 2009 felt like a little blip. That is slowly building again.
  • My friend & I had season tickets for the Bruins from 2009 - 2016. When I was convincing him to go in on them in the spring of '09, I told him it was the best crowd in Boston, and they were, because they were hungry. Then they won in 2011 and made it to the finals again in 2013 & the fans started acting like it was their birthright.

Winning changes everything and many cases, not for the better. The fans were as much a reason why I dropped the season tickets as the ticket prices themselves which had almost tripled. What had been an awesome & hungry crowd made up of fans who, like you said @MayDay10, had the mentality of "Holy shit it might actually happen" turned into a crowd of entitled shits with the mentality "Why the f isn't this happening?" and going to games simply stopped being fun.

& that was just the Bruins crowd w/ one title & one other final appearance under their belt (at the time). I won't get into how the Red Sox or Patriot fan bases have changed in the last 20 years.

The awful local sports media doesn't help, but in the end, it's stupid people who don't know enough to reject the barrage of media nonsense that's is the real problem.

I'm glad I lived through the '80s & '90s to help put these last 20 years in a better perspective. Boston sports fans under the age of 32 have no friggin' clue.

Winning does change things.  My favorite NFL fanbases to see in their home stadiums are the tortured ones.

    -Browns
    -Bills
    -Oakland (not anymore)

they seem to have the wildest fans.

I wrote this blog about a year & a half ago, trying to put a little perspective on the past 20 years for Boston sports.

I may have shared it before, but am putting it up again, as the website will soon be nonexistent.

    Feedback’s welcome, positive or negative.
Nice. Doesn't quite hit this level of entertainment for me, but interesting observations.

The Braves is another one I recall.  They were pretty excited and engaged in the late 80s and 90s with the braves' success.... but in the later years of their run, they werent selling many tickets, despite finishing in first place for like 15 straight years.

As I said, now that they may have joined the rest of us in the real world, I expect Boston sports fans to really migrate heavily toward which team(s) currently has the best chance at a title and they will feel like the #1 team in Boston at the time, while the team who may be on an off-period will be temporarily un-loved.

Its crazy.  I remember when they beat the Rams, national news was live in Boston the next morning and people were dancing around and it looked crazy.  Then you had the few near misses of the Red Sox and barely losing to the Yankees in 2003.  I remember the HBO special Curse of the Bambino and celebrities were like in tears describing what they think would happen if the Red Sox ever won a World Series.  It seemed everyone in the world was pulling for the Red Sox in 2004.  They did it and it was pretty epic.... but the Patriots were racking up titles at that time as well.  Then the Red Sox won a few more World Series which almost seem like footnotes.  I looked it up and dont even remember them beating the Cardinals in 2013, ha.

There is a large contingent (fills up a limo-bus) from Boston that travels here for the Bills/Pats game every year (one of my good friends is from Boston, married my friend's sister and moved down the street).  So they were here during the deciding game of the 2018 world series.  The game was on, and I swear I watched the game more than anybody.  Many were playing a card gambling/drinking game in a dining room with no view of the TV.  They came out to watch the last out and pretended to be happy, but that was it.  Quickly went back to the game, out to the deck for a smoke, etc.  I was dumbfounded.

OMG when I was 16 I needed therapy from watching the Sabres and Bills

There was a part of my brain that did not want the Bills to win this season.  I didn't want to have our first championship be in a pandemic hellscape world where we cant enjoy it as a community.  Of course, they may never get that close again.

I get your sentiment about the Bills this year, and it's not that crazy of a thought... I have a client in Vancouver who didn't want the Canucks to go deep in the playoffs last summer for the very same reason.

RE: Red Sox... In October of 2013 I was walking out of Pearl Jam's 2nd Brooklyn show & checked my phone to see the Sox won the pennant that same night & were advancing to the WS & I thought "Cool".

If you had told me 15 years prior that I wouldn't be all that fired up about the Sox making the WS I would have told you you were out of your mind.

They just showed the ad and our seven year old son says "those are two teams none of us like"
    We laugh.
Wife "I agree, the two teams I would least like to win"
Me "they should play this game to no television cameras."

    So sick of the hype.

I think I'd have gone for 4th and 3 in those conditions instead of the 56 yard FG, but what do I know. If you convert, you can bleed the clock dry and get a closer attempt.
If Folk made that kick, what do we think Brady would have done with 55 seconds and 2 timeouts anyway.

  • I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a regular season this much… I loved the last 5 years of Brady (‘til 2019), but the regular season games weren’t must see tv.

    This year is appointment viewing.
