Even though the numbers are tragic, Abrams says it's difficult to determine any trend in murder or other crimes over a short time span. He says for a more accurate statistical count it takes comparing what takes place from year to year over a longer period of time.

"When you look at the homicide data and compare it to levels over the past five years," he says, "we didn't see any significant impact because of the pandemic."

Even so, University of Chicago professor Jens Ludwig, the head of the university's Crime Lab, says it's a big puzzle why shootings and murders haven't dropped while other crimes have.

"Murders make up far less than 1% of the crimes in these cities," Ludwig says, "but murder is so damaging to families and communities, and I don't think we have a great understanding of why they haven't declined."

The pandemic seems to be driving a lot of the reduction in crime, including home burglaries. But in commercial spaces, there's been a bump in burglaries, up by almost 30% on average across the cities examined.

Abrams says there was also a dramatic jump in car theft in Philadelphia, with increases as well in Denver, Los Angeles and Austin, Texas. Baltimore was the only city that saw a substantial decline.

The interesting thing is, if you look at Seattle's crime data for the period from May 25th, the date of George Floyd's murder to the establishment of CHOP on June 8th and after, crime fell, and it fell precipitously, before picking back up from September 11th through October 19th, and falling again. Prior to the stay at home order issued on March 23rd, Seattle's crime rate was basically below the baseline average for the period 2015-2019. Why are you asking me to do that?  I assume you are making assumptions and systemically placing me in the cancel category cause I do not adhere to the party lines of this all accepting moving train.  Bullying goes both ways believe it or not.  But hey, if it makes some of you feel good to try to embarrass or be funny at the Expense of a  paying customer to a rock n roll website, have at it.  Not that it should matter, but I did not vote for our Current President .

Except for shootings and killings but who's differentiating, right? I mean crime is crime, up is down and down is up. And gun crime always gets a pass, unless its in shitties.

Crime dipping during that time can be traced to cops not arresting people.  Wasn’t there a stand down approach during those dates?

The shootings going up happened in NYC too.  No real good explanation.  I figured cops started writing more reports so they would look like there is a need for more policing but that can’t be proven.

The uptick in burglaries during that time makes sense too.  Empty stores are easier targets and if you have people desperate.
