    Thank you for having the guts to respond.   I am pretty sure these cities in question are not hiring more Police, on the contrary they are eliminating Police positions and using those funds for social workers and community activists to deal w/ certain 911 calls.   Seems to be a triumphant  success in Seattle if one is into the reimagine thing.

    Fair enough but like gimme pointed out, "Shitties" is not the kind of term that encourages discussion. 

    But that aside, yes, some of our big cities are struggling.  I don't think this as anything new though and it seems to go in cycles.  Take San Francisco, for example.  In the 50's and 60's, I went to the city a couple times a year with my folks and when I was old enough to go alone, with friends.  It was a fine city with very few problems.  I moved to the city in 1969 and lived there until 1973.  That was a time when the city was starting to deteriorate.  I worked at a few different jobs downtown and the place was depressing and a run-down mess. 

    By the 80's, San Francisco had rejuvenated and was a great place to spend time again.  But when the dot.com boom hit, it became a place of wealthy business people and wide-spread homes camps- a real mixed bag.  As more of the electronics workers are moving to work from home, rents are becoming more affordable and I'm guessing the city will reach a better balance again.

    Much the same happened in Oakland.

    From what I've read, New York City has also gone through these up and down transitions.  Probably other big cities as well.

    Cities rise and fall- it's been that way since ancient Athens and Rome.

    And in the not-to-distant future, I think the biggest problem areas will shift to the suburbs which will become unsustainable as energy sources become a problem as a result of peak oil.  And peak oil is a lot like global warming- something many are in denial about. 

    It's a shifting world.  It's too bad Seattle is having problems now, but I don't think that's anything new.  When I live an hour and a half from Seattle from 1990 to 1994, a lot of downtown Seattle was not a pleasant place to be- not to me anyway.  I'd seen better days there.

    Seattle has definitely changed. It's a beautiful city but very sad.

    I didn't click the link, but if you’re wondering about social services and tge police, in Eugene, OR an agency has been taking the mental health 911 calls for about 30 years. They end up picking up about 20% of the calls and save the city millions in the meantime. It’s not very confusing and I don’t know why it doesn’t get more coverage at the national level.

    I would argue that the silence from the right in addressing the attack on our democracy and election integrity is far more concerning than the silence about anything that's currently happening in any one American city.

    Don't know. 2020 is lower than 2019 but higher than 2018. I don't recall anyone screaming about saving Seattle's soul back in 2019. It could be the 100 extra officers the new chief put out on the street. It could be the stimulus. It could be promise of police and other reforms or a combination of things, like it usually is to contributors to crime rates and solutions to crime rates.

    What I find interesting is that there are probably 50+ other US cities with higher crime rates than Seattle's but nobody is screaming that they have lost their soul or have fallen. Why is that? Hint: 2 reasons and one begins with C and the other with A.
