Gigaton is a masterpiece!

I think Gigaton could be considered a late-career masterpiece, particularly when one realizes that PJ has been making music for 30 years. I'm not sure I can consider it a true masterpiece, because I like six other PJ studio albums better (Ten, Yield, Riot Act, No Code, Versus, and Vitalogy). Placing it right behind Vitalogy says a lot though!0

So which albums are usually considered masterpiece? Beatles Stg. Pepper? I'd skip 3-4 songs, but absolutely love the rest. Same with Exile on Main Street. Or Springsteen's Born to Run? I hate tenth avenue freeze-out.
This is either their best or one of their best albums in the last twenty years. Bottom line .

After my first listen, I was a little disappointed. I don't know if it's because I had a different vision of what it would be in my head or something. Anyway, after a couple of more listens to the full album, I just fell in love with it. It's pretty much all I've been listening to now and can't stop. I cannot wait to hear these songs live...someday!1991-11-30 St. Paul, MN 1992-08-28 St. Paul, MN 1998-06-30 Minneapolis, MN 2000-10-08 East Troy, WI 2003-06-16 St. Paul, MN 2006-06-26 St. Paul, MN 2006-06-27 St. Paul, MN 2006-07-07 San Diego, CA 2007-08-05 Chicago, IL 2008-06-24 New York, NY 2009-08-23 Chicago, IL 2009-08-24 Chicago, IL 2011-07-02 EV Minneapolis, MN 2011-09-03 PJ20 East Troy, WI 2011-09-04 PJ20 East Troy, WI 2013-07-19 Wrigley Chicago, IL 2014-10-19 St. Paul, MN0

I didn't say all albums. No Code is usually my favorite and they could have easily left Mankind off.pjhawks said:

Late career masterpiece sounds a bit depressing. My favourite album is Yield, but I'm not sure if that is a masterpiece. When it came out I skipped several songs I like now.JimFletcherPearlJam said:I think Gigaton could be considered a late-career masterpiece, particularly when one realizes that PJ has been making music for 30 years. I don't know what a masterpiece is anyway. Do criics tell us, or does everybody have their own? Besides all The great songs on Gigaton I love how they flow into each other. I haven't skipped anything, but neither have I hit shuffle yet. Just feels wrong. So for me the album aß a whole is a masterpiece.

I literally skip to get to those songs. I’d say your right, excellent and masterpiece are different. It is excellent.jimjam1982 said:It's really good. Several months in we can say its probably not going to be considered a masterpiece. Alright and Comes Then Goes are very skippable tracks.0 -
I really have enjoyed this album. I have been listening to it a lot lately.
I really have been digging 7 O'clock and Comes Then Goes. And I still find DotC a fantastic change of pace for the band."A smart monkey doesn't monkey around with another monkey's monkey" - Darwin's Theory0 -
The album is just really fantastic. If a non fan asked me what are your favorite PJ songs ever or songs a newbie should listen to, i feel like this album has so many contenders.
DotC, Quick Escape, Alright, River Cross, the rest of the album!
I just really like it and have to force myself to listen to other things. To me, that’s a sign that this is one album that is going to stick around with me forever. Love it.0 -

I will say that I was not a big fan of this song at the outset, but I now really like it. I like it's quirkiness.www.myspace.com0 -
Totally, it’s awesome - groovy, fun, and loud. The Juggler said:

I dont know about a masterpiece, but after 3 months of listening to it, im confident in saying it's a great album, and fits in nicely with their best work. At this point with lightning bolt and backspacer, the initial excitement of new pj had worn off and I accepted that to my ears, those albums were mediocre at best. I lost faith that pj had it in them to deliver an album of quality to match their their glory years which in my mind is the 91-2003 period.
With gigaton they delivered. If this album finished as strong as the first 4 tracks start, I might be willing to call it a masterpiece. However, while I do find redeeming qualities in every track, it does get a little spotty in the back end.
Id argue that who ever said is as good of a track as the band has every recorded.
This album is only going to get better once these songs join the live rotation. Those first four tracks should be live staples for the years to come.0 -
Been listening every day since Day 1. I think it's an incredible record. If it hasn't faded by now in my rotation, it's a winner!

Totally, 3 months in and I'm still incessantly listening. I think I stopped listening to Lightning Bolt front to back after a week.T-Bone 82 said:Been listening every day since Day 1. I think it's an incredible record. If it hasn't faded by now in my rotation, it's a winner!Milwaukee 2014

Agree on all accounts. I'd add Seven O'clock to the staples rotation giving it 5 total which is outstanding.Chasing Footsteps said:

I've been thinking about it's final ranking in my mind and I simply give it 41/2 out of 5 stars. Using the Rolling Stone magazine scale where 4 stars means Excellent and 5 means Classic.0 -
Gigaton was released exactly three months ago here in Germany, and I still can't get enough of it.
This is the best ablum of the year for me so far, and the best Pearl Jam record since Yield.
