this is why GPs arent dentists.. antibiotics wouldve put a temporary "band aid" on the situation.. and the pain would be back within a week or 2. the cause of the infection has to be removed.
any more than 3 needles on a little tacker and you at risk of overdosing him. the doctor would know that.. i would hope.
and yes, the pH of the surrounding area of an abcsess does counteract the anesthtising effect... but 3 carpules in a small child is a lot and would have anesthtised the area almost completely.
the other option would have been referring him to hospital to have it out under general anaesthetic.
possibly a pulpotomy (root canal for kids) wouldve done the trick, but this depends on the size of the infection.
i've had to do this to 1 little fella and it was the hardest thing ive ever had to do, but if the tooth isnt removed, then a facial swelling can increase. a facial swelling can spread under the jaw, block the airway and kill the patient. if it spreads from an upper tooth, it can reach the venous plexus, flood the bloodstream with bacteria and give the patient scepticemia... which can again result in death. these are rare, but not impossible.
at least the tooth is out.. wouldve been best if it was taken out under GA, but sometimes we dont have that luxury on hand. the bad thing now is his dental phobia. hopefully he overcomes this with age.. but it aint easy.
No he wasn't numb....with each needle the dentist did a prick thing on his gum and after the 3rd needle he was still feeling it after about 15 minutes....that's when the dentist asked me to lay on top of Connor to hold him down :(
The Dr told me the same that anti biotics wouldn't have cured the poblem but it would've been better to get rid of the infection, THEN deal with removing the tooth.
Connor had already had a lot of surgery done on his teeth the previous year (you can probably notice the silver cap on his tooth in that photo) and the Dentist that extracted the tooth was initially saying that there should be no feeling as his records said that the nerve had been removed.....after the tooth was removed he realized it hadn't and seemed quite puzzled
I honestly believe this Dentist was just in a hurry......I must have asked him 4 times if he REALLY had to get the tooth out there and then and his response was that the problem would just keep re-occurring and that we might as well get it over and done with.....I'm sure that's true, but I think it couldve been dealt with better. I wish we'd gone the antibiotics first and THEN had the tooth extracted.
Connor was only 4/5 years old when it was done, so hopefully he will get over the whole traumatic experience......I can tell you I never will though :(

There is one that will let me do it everytime i work with her, other people maybe once a fortnight, or if they et some new toy thing that makes it easier they'll make me do it so i can see how the toy works, or how to use the bronchoscopes to see and what not..

Good luck mate, i'm sure you'll be fine, try not to stress to much about it either, or go over too much too close to the exam.

If I have to go I cant see why they wouldnt let you when its open book. I cant gain any advantage leaving. Ill tell the chick Ill piss on the carpet or her leg if I have to. And trust me Id expose myself in front of 400 people well before pissing myself
