Fire things make more sense. Boys/ men want to destroy. Nature (alsof looking at the video's)  are an enormous motive in this song. To me it is all about disconnect of nature and with each other. (Which also explains the "positive", which.doesnt sound positive at all, but forcing yourself to think that way, while everything is falling apart aroumd you. Therei s also a def. political emotive here. What was the interpretation given on the YT channel?

File things makes perfect sense too, we are so very desirous of putting labels on everything and everyone, creating what we consider order among the chaos of nature, and exerting control.

As a parent of teenage girls (like Ed) I wondered if "fire things" referred to vaping.  I know that's a stretch but teenage boys do tend to focus on

    1. Their dicks
    2. Pics of themselves
    3. Vaping

of course that is if the lyrics are "dicks and pics and fire things"

I see "boys" here as just a synonym for the entire male gender, not just young men. This particular line (which officially is "dix and fix and fire things") seems to be about toxic masculinity and male stereotypes, of which guns are a big part. It makes the most sense given the theme of the song but what seals it is at the end of Mach III, Ed makes a gun motion with his hand while he sings the line.

I think it would have been nice if the lyrics would have progressed more in the "Grow their dicks and fix and file things"

Grow their wits and hit and fire things
Grow their tricks and mix and admire things
Grow their dicks and fix and file things

or some other variation on the lyrics... it seems like other parts of the story/song progress, but that lyric is on repeat and could have more impact if it were in the last iteration of it...

Finally, I see the gun motion you are referring to at the end of the song. For the longest time, I could only see the "positive, positive!" promise of the cross your heart and gun motion.

This sort of confirms its about relationships.  Even tho somehow that was in question before?
Yes, relationships, but what relationships? Person to person, humanity to the planet, one’s actions to one’s motivations...etc.

All could be correct. It’s the malleability of Ed’s lyrics that are fantastic and why it attracts a diverse fan base. Love these.

I like the words, however they string out, better than the music. It is a good song for dancing, tho

Dix is French for 10.  The term "Dixie" comes from Dix.  Dixieland or Dixie.  "I wish I was in Dixie", that sort of thing.  People wanted to go to the South specifically NOLA to make Dix because it paid more. French/Creole origins.
A stretch?  Maybe.  Boys want to grow their money?  I learned this while in NOLA.

I think it is referencing Trump's insecurity about his small hands (dick) and his notoriety for "firing" people on his tv show and in the current shit show.

  • I was surprised to hear "dicks" uncensored on the radio.    What a country!
A child's rhyme stuck in my head...
It said "Life is nothing but a dream."

To find I'd known this all along.

    ^ That's because it's dix - haha
  • Apple music had them wrong. Fire things  makes perfect  sence . I feel file does  not. Why would a boy file more than a girl.?
But guns mainly fired by boys who want to feel big imo.
    Agree!

So waiting for the official lyrics once the album is released. I'm putting my money on "fire things" and I've seen people get tattoos and selling crappy home made crafts with "file things". Poor people if that's the case, ha.

To me fire makes most sense because as others have so astutely pointed out, fire being a big motif in the video, a gun reference and gun hand sign Ed makes in the video and maybe a knock on Trump who made a name on TV for firing people.

I'm putting my guess out here timestamped so I can do some nice "I told ya so's" once the album drops, ha.
