That desire to reproduce/populate and create order by fixing and filing things really reminds me directly of the entire theme of DTE.  Fire things fits in with that just as well and having both makes it a miniature mirror image of Do the Evolution.
Ed is certainly well-versed in carrying themes and motifs throughout his career, I love that about his lyrics.  Symbols like lightning bolts, the moon, cars, etc. really call back to other songs and link it all up in a very nice way.

I love the internet ! there is so much shit to giggle at...all the freakin time   ;)
  • Maybe you guys don't realize - Sea is a mod. Those seem to be the official lyrics and have been added to the Pearl Jam YT channel, or rather, the lyrics have been expanded today to include the dix/fix/fire line.

Yeah, but I would sure like to have a C Note for every time the official lyrics for a song don't match up to what is actually sung on an album!

I really don't hear "who's greater than the sum"
It definitely sounds more to me like "can be greater than the sum" with the "can" clipped off so that it actually comes out " not one man, cbe greater than the sum"

Sure but for lyrical interpretation, the official would be the starting point, ie. no need to try and explain "file".

Apple music had them wrong. Fire things  makes perfect  sence . I feel file does  not. Why would a boy file more than a girl.?
But guns mainly fired by boys who want to feel big imo.

Fire things make more sense. Boys/ men want to destroy. Nature (alsof looking at the video's)  are an enormous motive in this song. To me it is all about disconnect of nature and with each other. (Which also explains the "positive", which.doesnt sound positive at all, but forcing yourself to think that way, while everything is falling apart aroumd you. Therei s also a def. political emotive here. What was the interpretation given on the YT channel?

File things makes perfect sense too, we are so very desirous of putting labels on everything and everyone, creating what we consider order among the chaos of nature, and exerting control.

As a parent of teenage girls (like Ed) I wondered if "fire things" referred to vaping.  I know that's a stretch but teenage boys do tend to focus on

    1. Their dicks
    2. Pics of themselves
    3. Vaping

of course that is if the lyrics are "dicks and pics and fire things"

I see "boys" here as just a synonym for the entire male gender, not just young men. This particular line (which officially is "dix and fix and fire things") seems to be about toxic masculinity and male stereotypes, of which guns are a big part. It makes the most sense given the theme of the song but what seals it is at the end of Mach III, Ed makes a gun motion with his hand while he sings the line.

I think it would have been nice if the lyrics would have progressed more in the "Grow their dicks and fix and file things"

Grow their wits and hit and fire things
Grow their tricks and mix and admire things
Grow their dicks and fix and file things

or some other variation on the lyrics... it seems like other parts of the story/song progress, but that lyric is on repeat and could have more impact if it were in the last iteration of it...

Finally, I see the gun motion you are referring to at the end of the song. For the longest time, I could only see the "positive, positive!" promise of the cross your heart and gun motion.

This sort of confirms its about relationships.  Even tho somehow that was in question before?
Yes, relationships, but what relationships? Person to person, humanity to the planet, one’s actions to one’s motivations...etc.

All could be correct. It’s the malleability of Ed’s lyrics that are fantastic and why it attracts a diverse fan base. Love these.
