Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Green River, Screaming Trees, Mother Love Bone, Malfunkshun & more - The alternate rock / grunge movement of the late 80s / early 90s changed the musical landscape. The Seattle Sound revolutionized the musical world, bringing punk to the masses. Today, the musical landscape is changing again as alternative rock / grunge bands are being included on classic rock radio stations.

  • Both current and classic. I was only 3 when ten was released and now I have my own baby. I would consider it classic rock.

But, they have a new album coming out and are still gaining new fans so they are still a current rock band as well.

No.  Classic rock is the 60’s and 70’s.

Yes.  If classic rock is just stuff that is over 20 years old.

I used that same evaluation.  When I first listened to classic rock it was 80s and 90s and the music was from 60s and 70s.
That timeline makes PJ classic rock at this point

    Yes.
Regarding bands from the 80s/90s, Sonic youth is one of the few that I would still consider Alternative.

Their sound is classic. Meaning it sounds just as good now as it did then. So yes, classic rock 🤘🏽

Definitely classic rock.  The 90's was along time ago at this point!

Does the moniker “classic rock” refer to age or to a certain style?    I will always view classic rock as 60’s and 70’s.  Everything else after is just “rock”.  100 years from now will 2080 music be classic rock when rock is 150 years old at that point?

Agreed. We were closer to the release of Led Zeppelin's first album when Ten came out than we are now to the release of Ten.

We can't define classic as coming from two particular decades. Time marches on and beloved things that were once new get older and become classic. Think of cars. Pearl Jam has definitely become classic.

It was jarring to hear Pearl Jam on WZLX in Boston for the first time, but it very quickly came to feel totally natural. They blend in perfectly and it just works.

I don’t think classic necessarily means old.   New classical music is being made now and would be considered classical the day it is made.  I view classic rock as a style of its own versus rock that is more than 220 years old.

Is rap music today going to be called Old School rap in 20 years?
